I'm trying to setup a custom server for my son, but I'm having an issue with getting it to work, while using my VPN services on other apps.
I'm using ExpressVPN, setup with VPN Tunneling so it'll only put fixed apps behind the VPN, but when this is connected, I get a crash with error connection refused.
127.0.0.1 pings fine.
Running on Windows 10 Pro.
I tried googling so much that I'm going blind from it, I can't find a solution for it, except shutting down the VPN services, but that's not a viable solution

Is there a way around, so that it can work while other services running on my server is using the VPN?
There are other solutions that work without using VPNs: a dedicated server host or minecraft realms, for example.
I know, but since I already have a server inhouse that can be used for it, it wouldn't cost me any extra, except for my time that I have plenty of with this lockdown.
Nobody that has had the same issue and found a solution?
Still looking for a solution, haven't been lucky so far. So here's a little bump, in hopes of someone with the knowledge will see my post and stop my son from nagging me 24/7
Talk about how you think the VPN works because I'm not really sure how the crash happens. Does your son connect to the VPN, attempt a connection, and then it crashes? Do you start the MC server, then the VPN, and it crashes? Do you start the VPN, MC server, and then it crashes?
How's the VPN connection? Can you ping between the two devices? I'm assuming you're both connected to the VPN which means you both should have somewhat similar IP schemes.
Perhaps the split tunnel is doing something to interfere with something? Normally, I would think people push traffic through the tunnel to the outside of the VPN service, not have a server, though that shouldn't change much.
Are there guides or videos of people using Express? And specifically a MC server? Maybe they configured some kind of error that you haven't? Unlikely but still may be worth a shot.
Also a connection refused is odd. At first I thought this was a client crash because of the connection refused but then again, I would have thought a client crash would have a connection timed out because packets are getting lost on the way to the server. But a connection refused on the server is also odd.
I'll try again:
I got a server running at home, with different apps/services. I want to use this to host a MC server for my kid.
This server is running a VPN for a few specific services, using split tunneling, so that all other programs are not affected by this. This includes the MC server, it's excluded from the VPN, but it's like it refuses to use my main LAN adapter, but tries to use the VPN adapter instead.
No clients in the house is using VPN servies, this is ONLY for the server.
When this is up and running and I start the MC server, it crashes immediatly with "error connection refused". It simply won't run.
I can't find anyone posting info on the same setup as me, with the server running with VPN and doing MC server. I've used several hours/days but with no luck, so I'm starting to think that this might not be possible even though that doesn't sit well with me, everything should be possible
