My sister had set up a realm and is paying each month to have it work even though she is unemployed. Since I have a commercial server home lab, I figured I would get a server set up and we could then get the realm world data and move it to my server. I grabbed the java edition server and have everything set up to get it to work but I am unable to get someone to be able to connect to it from outside of the network. I have set up all of the port forwarding that I need and I am able to connect to it with the java version of Minecraft from on the network but I am unable to get Minecraft for Windows 10 to connect to it. Can anyone help me in getting this working so my family all over the world will be able to connect to my server?
You cannot join a Java Edition server using Windows 10 Edition (Bedrock) or vice versa. They are two separate versions of the game and their servers are not cross-compatible with each other. You can either download Java Edition's server software from Minecraft's website to run a Java server or Bedrock Edition's software to run a Bedrock server, but you cannot join them using the other edition of Minecraft.
Thank you for your insights. I was able to get my server setup and my nephew to be able to see it. I hope that xbox players and the like will be able to find it also.
The plugin GeyserMC allows cross-platform play on Java and Bedrock. If you want to play with folks who don't have a Java edition account, you'll need to install Floodgate alongside it. The setup's pretty easy but keep in mind you'll also have to port-forward the port Geyser's running on. I hope this solves your problem.

Then how do realms work since they are accessible by XBox, Switch, Bedrock, and Java?
