A dedicated host might be better for you.

Then what you want to do is use Minecraft Bedrock Edition and set "Multiplayer" to allow your friends to connect to your machine. It requires no technical knowledge, and it "just works". You may have lag issues, but it is far easier to manage than trying to do it with Java. And if you have the Java Edition, you can get the code to play Bedrock Edition for free.
Consider reading the Wiki a test. If you can not read the Wiki to understand enough and be able to ask *specific* questions on how to do this, you failed the "test", and you are not able to run a server. I manage both a Java Server with a dedicated service that is actually cheaper than Realms, and a Bedrock Realms server. Realms makes it very easy to "manage" a server, they do all the hard work.
Time, Money, Quality: Pick any *TWO*. If you can't sink money into it (and it really is NOT much money at all), then YOU are going to have to invest YOUR time to learn the ropes, or it simply isn't going to work out for you. Sorry, but life's like this.
