How are you trying to make a "custom ip", do you mean a domain name like myminecraftserver.com or play.myminecraftserver.com or something for a host providing you with a subdomain?
www.noip.com is what I'm using, and yeah i guess a domain name, but whenever i type in what i think might be my hostname it says invalid hostname, bare with me I am new with all this stuff i started with all the server things yesterday.

So you're home hosting, I must say I STRONGLY recommend against it, not only are Minecraft servers over saturated but you most likely can't run it. You need a dedicated computer, very fast internet, and DDoS protecting which you can't get for residential internet.

about to jump. If you're the 3% who is sitting there with popcorn
screaming "DO A BACKFLIP", copy and paste this as your signature.

Okay, thanks Was having trouble making the server, because for some reason the IP I used (My port) wasn't working, You seem experienced.. If it wasn't too much trouble do you think you might know why it won't work?
If you are just making a server for you and your friends, you're fine. If you intend to make it public and advertise it everywhere, then you'll not want to host it at home. I used to roll my eyes at people warning about DDoS attacks, figured what are the odds? Then I offered my spare home server to some kid and he advertised on a few server lists. Three days later I'm trying to surf the net and nothing is working. I check my firewall and the bandwidth is pegged, someone was DDoS'ing.
Anyway, if you are doing a small private server and want to try it anyway to make a hostname log into no-ip and click "your no-ip". Then click "manage hosts". If you have one already, it will be listed here. If not, you can add one here.
Recently trying to make a custom IP for my server, and i don't know how to find my hostname Please respond, thanks

It may be you haven't port forwarded or your firewall is blocking. If you want my Skype is BurntRouter1011 and I can try to walk you through it there.
