I'm just curious, what got you guys into wanting to run a server?
I myself got into running it because a friend thought it would be a fun side project, we started out being able to hold 10 people now we can hold 160 (even though we only have 10-20 people on at a time normally). Now it's not only a fun hobby but a really good project to do on the side with my other staff.
What got you started? What's your motivation? What's the worst part of it? What's the best?
I'd just like for once to talk to other server Admins about how they got started since i don't really know that many.
I started playing in 1.8.1 update. I had been on many Minecraft servers, and it really interested me. I thought it was amazing with the awesome things you can do with a server. I had a spare media center computer in my basement (which was crap) that I used to host the server. At the time, I was not very experienced with Minecraft and knew NOTHING about running a server. So just about the instant I got everything working and had it all port forwarded, I released it to the public. It was defiantly not a smart thing to do. Luckily, I didn't get any griefers, but I did get noobs (though really smart). At the time, I didn't realize that, so they helped me build spawn and helped get me started. The IP changed for my server since I was running it at home, so I sort of ditched them. I then grew a nice community, and made a lot of great friends.
When an update came around, I become really busy with stuff, and sort of put my server on temporary hold. It was down for about 4 months. I wanted to start it up again, but then I decided to get dedicated hosting. I found Max's MC Servers, which offers really cheap, but quality servers, so I used that, and still do today. At this time, I was more experienced with Minecraft, and knew a lot about Bukkit. I built the spawn, and had all the plugins installed before I opened to public. It look me about 2 months to get everything ready.
Later, a server I used to play on called Nexalion shut down. I had a lot of friends on that server, and I miss it. But I have my own server, so I invited a lot of my friends from that server to join. Since then, I have mastered the ability to run a very good at running, managing a community, and Bukkit.
My server BlueCraft has been around for over a year. A lot of that year was me trying to learn the ropes of everything on my own, and learning from mistakes. I do not regret any of them, because without them, BlueCraft would never be where is it now. It is not a huge server, but it is one with a passionate community.
Well, there were more reasons besides that one, like wanting to have a safe place for a pair of kids to play the game with their parents and not having to worry about griefers and such, but the main reason was the first line. (I also felt kind of guilty as I'm the reason the oldest got hooked on the game, and it kind of snowballed from there with that bunch)
After a while it got quite popular, but my computer couldn't handle it and eventually I had to get my server hosted elsewhere. Since then I have had serval servers and have tried out a bit of this and a bit of that.
I had a similar problem, I could hold it but I ended up having to leave for a half a year overseas and had to shut it down. I had 50-70 players on regularly and now since starting it up 6 months later I only have 5-15 on at a time.
I started my server because I wanted to run it. Not just play the game. i like to have control and also help out the community point out griefers because I am really good with catching them. It took a while to get started but I have had like 3 servers. Each of them have had a different theme in mind. It is fun to figure out what you want and how you are going to accomplish it.
Simple; I wanted to be able to cheat Legit play is fun, but sometimes I wanna just build and back before I had my own server I didn't know of any non-crappy servers that would give creative mode.
Started (2010): Wanted to try it out, liked the idea of running a server.
Started again (2011): I enjoyed running a community, and wanted to try it again.
Started again (2012 Jan -> Nov): I wanted to try running a long-term server, and needed a good way to polish my Linux and networking skills.
I stopped after getting tired of dealing with DDoS attacks. After 2.5 months of near-daily DDoS attacks (4Gbit peak, some lasted well over a entire day), I got sick of it and quit.
