Lately I have been trying to set up a server and it is not working. I know I did all the port forwarding correct, and I just use the Bukkit auto-installer to set up the server itself. However, no matter what it "Can't connect to server" I'm not sure what the problem is, and it may be the computer I'm using. It is not physically plugged into the router, so that might be the problem. It gets internet from it of course, but I don't know. I thought it was impossible to run a server on a computer that is not plugged into the router, but my friend told me otherwise.
I'm sorry if I'm being stupid here. Just need some help. Thanks!
what auto installer did you use?
you can host the server wireless, but wired is always faster.
It says the port is closed, but every port tester I try says that. I forwarded the port correctly though, or at least I think I did. Did everything the guide told me from portforward.com.
The firewall may be the problem, because for some reason when I try to open it it says "Windows Firewall could not open settins due to an unidentified problem. So I can't open it to edit the settings. :/
first a silly question, the server is running correct?
if the port is being shown as closed then either you didn't forward the port correctly, or your firewall is blocking the port.
double check the ip of the system run ipconfig/all at the cmd prompt...the ipv4 number is the one you want)
make sure thats the same as the one you forwarded
check your server.properties file to verify your using the right port number (25565 is default)
use the website i said above to get your external ip (this is what you hand out)
if your on the same computer as the server you can connect with localhost, if its a different computer use the ipv4 ip.
you can try using your external ip, but that doesn't always work with all routers
