This might seem like common knowledge, but to the newbie owners it might help.
Chances are that if you run a major public server, you are renting a well maintained, 24/7 server.
But if your like me and run a minor private server, you use your own PC. Now, as we know, PC's can be prone to heat. A lot of it. And my laptop, which I run my server on, overheats really fast. I do my best do prevent it, but it just cant be completely stopped. I never thought this was a HUGE issue, but man I was wrong. My laptop started to randomly shut down for no reason do to heat, so my server would be stopped without the stop command. Do to the lack of world saving during these instances, I had 2 of my worlds corrupted- and some angry players. Now I take measures to keep the heat down, but I'm looking in to extra cooling parts, or whatever.
So, the moral of this story is- NEVER let your server overheat.
(Or just don't run your server on a budget-priced laptop.)
Yep, as Strontkever said, Laptops are NOT meant for 24/7 use. But hey, lesson learned, right?
Indeed, lesson WELL learned. My laptop is on for about 8 hours a day, and my fan is pretty much broken.
I still havent fixed my cituation, but I am soon.
decent pc's dont overheat, and laptops arent made for 24/7
fan control takes care of heat, and if thats not enough, your hardware setup is faulty
oh, dust in heatsinks cause problems many times , put a vacuum on it, or use pressured, clean it each 6 months
I agree with you on the laptops are not for 24/7 part, but any PC can overheat. It depends on the conditions.
i run a public 24/7 server on my computer it is always on like it has for about 2 months but it hasent overheat yet and im running it on my computer because i dont have enough money to you a website owned server so... does mine never overheat? (i have a mac if that has something to do with it lol)

Yeah the Mac part is helping (shame your not on a PC though :P) But yeah you are lucky.
Any good computer will throttle down before it overheats (AMD has some mobo level protection that seems relatively easy to disable which is pretty stupid).
My server runs in a closet with the door open a creak and it stays at ambient temperature.

Well it depends on the PC i think. I think that sometimes servers can goon 24/7. I had a server (On a friend's PC) on a really good computer and we had it on for one day. Nothing happens. The computer is fine. For laptops, servers cause a huge problem (Since my computer IS A LAPTOP) I never keep my own server on 24/7.

Yeah, my laptop is screwed due to this server thing. Ive overworked it so badly I might have to wipe it D:
I dont thing water is gonna help..
Though i did stick it in my freezer once for about 2 minutes, not gonna lie. I swear that helped it.
Though that was a absolutley major noob move, and very lazy.
My Old laptop I actually used this trick (along with having it set on a docking station so it lifted above) it help so it went from 89-98 Degree down to 60-70 Degrees Celsius.
After i got tired of all thous bag of ice i just took an external fan and pointed it at the Laptops Fan it helped with 10 Degrees.
But the best trick i've done is i bought a Lenovo which i am using now It over 2 yrs old and its still keeps the temperature about 60 Degree. (My server runs on a Desktop with Liquid cooling. In room without Heating,
But even after that my mainly issue was electricity after i set up my Desktop, Laptop, TV, Stove, and all that it cut the power xP. And when a Desktop don't got any power it shut off. So i went out and bought a Desktop Battery. (only give about 30 Mins but enough to turn on the power.)
I run my server on my server and my server never overheats...
Though I pay hundreds of dollars every month to maintain a professional server.. wait wut?
If your server on your server in a datacenter for hosting servers and housing servers overheated, then said datacenter is probably really dodgy can cannot house servers, especially your server which runs your server.
If your laptop is crazy overheating the fan might be clogged with dust and crap, so try cleaning it and you should see an improvement.
I used to run my small server via my laptop, but it got so annoying that I just bought a paid host for $10/month. It really is worth it, even for small servers. My server gets around 16 users online at peak times, and I have gotten enough donations to pay for the hosting and a few months more!
I need to run it off my laptop for better control over it, but Id say that you are right about my fan.
Most (If not all) Hosts offer that.
Why would you buy a server if you couldn't modify plugins or worlds?
I also cant afford to get a server, nor do I need it. I just need to fix my laptop. A professional host WOULD be really nice, but again, its not necesary. I also alternate between bukkit and vanilla a lot, and I dont think I could do that if Ibought a host.

Well, as I say my computer 'STFU!' I run a decent size server on a Mac laptop. Also your computer can overheat even quicker if you don't have enough memory for everything which means your computer is pushing itself to the limit and even farther which is VERY bad. If you ever want a new laptop if you fry yours, make a custom one or buy a Mac. Also fans are great! Even a mini one.

I had this problem (not to the extent you did but my laptop got pretty hot) just from playing minecraft. I found that if you put your laptop on a plastic crate it will easily lower your temp 15 degrees. If you put a fan facing up(even a USB fan) in the crate you can have your temps like its just sitting there doing nothing when it's really running as fast as it can!

What do you mean "Better Control"?
What can't you do on a online host that you can do on your laptop?
I need full control over everything- plugins, worlds, etc.

Macs typycally have better hardware so in generall it would work better.
Even though Mac's are crap...
