Im going to rent a server from these guys. https://www.datashack.net/dedicated/
Im going to purchase the 4GB plan.
Im going to use it to:
2-3GB for our main mc server (50+ slot), 1 private test server (500-700GB), backups and maybe webhosting or renting out the last bit of it.
So, here is what I need some help with.
1. Is this a host I should go with? Do their prices and hardware look good? (I'd ofc take the 4GB DDR3 plan with the best cpu). Will it hold for my usage?
2. What OS? How do I actually set up a minecraft server on a dedicated server? (they can provide:
- CentOS 5.6 32/64bit
- Debian 6.0 32/64bit
- Ubuntu 10.10 32/64bit
- CentOS 6.0 64bit
- Other linux disto
and the Winodws 03 or 08 OS. (Or no OS)
Please provide a link to a good tutorial or write a detailed tutorial here
I'll setup your server for free if you want to. I replied to your other thread, go with CentOS. They don't seem to be offering the latest versions, but I believe it can be upgraded.
I've never heard of Velia, but I've heard of DataShack who are one of the most known USA dedicated providers. Can't remember what kind of reputation they had, so I'd look around with Google and search WHT (WebHostingTalk) for reviews.
Datashack isn't one of the most known per say, but they are the very bottom of the barrel for budget customers. Kansas City has a lot of budget bin dedicated servers. Remember that you get what you pay for and you'll be happy with whoever you choose.
The CPU on there isn't very good, I'd recommend an E3-1240 or i7 2600.

S4U has very mixed reviews, both good and bad. And no, that CPU is not made for Minecraft or other intesive calculating. Stick with your previous one from DataShack.
EDIT: Clinton ninja'd me a bit there. Like I said, get a i7-2600 or E3-1240. Why Ubuntu though? You'd be better with a CentOS 6.2, really.
Well.. I'd like something "cheap" and good. (4GB or 6GB). Would be VERY cool if I'd manage to get a good dedi for 50$ or less. If there is something like that, we'd get loads of money to advertise AMD Opteron™ 3280, 8 Cores, 8x 2.4 GHz
Woud that one hold?

You may not be able to get a dedicated for that price. If you're okay with EU locations, look at Hetzner.de and OVH for budget plans. Alternatively, look for a VPS, they may be able to do it for $40-50/m for 4GB.
I'd check out NFOServers. I have a VPS with them with three cores, 5GB of memory, 300GB of storage, 3TB of bandwidth, a 5GB SSD, and Windows Server 2008 R2. I use Windows for the main OS which runs the Minecraft server, and I have an Ubuntu 10.01 virtual machine to host a website. It costs just about $100 per month.
CentOS 6.0 if possible, 5.x otherwise. 64 bit of course, unless you have extremely low RAM.
As for DataShack, their network is pure Cogent and HE. It's decent from what I've heard, but not amazing.
If you're going with Datashack, go for the i3/i5/i7. If you want to try a different host, you could try Hetzner, Kimsufi, Yesuphost, or maybe Server4You.

THANKS!
As for an OS, I'd recommend CentOS.
Yeah, I know both are sold out. I contacted then and they said the should be back in stock within a few weeks.
Why wouldnt you go with those plans, and why CentOS? How does that OS work?
Would this be better?

Best of luck with your search.

100$ maximum. (for now)
Cool.
Thats cheap, but is the CPU good enough on the 4GB plan? Lol, that costs the same as my 2GB RAM VPS.
