Hi I'm trying to move my overseas minecraft server here in my house and i've called different internet service providers and asking for a quote on how much a 25mbps upload speed would cost me and the response are around $400 to $1,000+ per month as you can see my server is 80player cap and i can easily host this overseas for $150 per month! so you know see my problem here.
my question is
if your hosting your server in your house with 80-100 player capacity how much upload speed would you need to reach 80-100 players? computer ram would range from 6-12gb of ram.
Who is your internet service provider & how much is the estimate you pay for monthly internet.
Indeed I have hosted my server at home for two months straight, I could handle about 40 people with 15up and 25 down.
Reasons I don't recommend doing this, your network speed will suffer.
. Your players will suffer when you use your Internet, aka Netflix HD.
. Potential for outside threats.
. DDOS
Mainly just don't do it for security reasons, take it from me a ccna student.

I'd suggest keeping your current connection and getting a secondary line in for the server to keep things smooth for the players. As far as bandwidth requirements I'm not exactly sure what would be best. 25Mbps should be plenty, I'm sure 10Mbps would be fine. When it comes to RAM I'd put as much RAM in your system as possible since RAM is cheap.

Therefor by doing that I will be spending twice the money I spend on my server right now. $120 for webz.
Btw im not the OP.

Why in the world would you pay 120 dollars for a Webs website? 9 dollars a year you can host a website on your server. If you really have no experience with HTML, PHP, etc., you can either use a CMS (Wordpress, etc.) or get some free HTML templates.

Just rent one. Look at the hidden issues with hosting at home:
Uptime issues
Power stability issues
Network stability issues (residential lines don't have a SLA!)
Low quality bandwidth (ISPs don't usually bother with the quality that datacenters do)
Extremely expensive to get enough bandwidth
Power is expensive
You have to pay for hardware
A DDoS attack would knock down your server without a issue, and take your home internet down with it
Using your internet will saturate the line, reducing effective bandwidth usable for the server (unless you have a extremely large pipe and some advanced QoS rules)

lol yea, your players won't be happy when you are downloading stuff
I home hosted for a few years. Comcast Workplace account, 50 down/15 up. Never had more than 15 on at once so I can't speak to how many I could've handled max. Every time I'd fire up NewsBin and start a download, I could see the chat log filling with the players crying about lag hehe. Wasn't worth it in the long run - $220/mo for the internet + $40ish for electric plus the annoyance of having to throttle my downloads and worrying about who is on when/if a reboot is needed. Not worth it.
I run my server within my house and it is VERY nice and works perfectly! It is a 35GB of RAM server and I have around 10mbs and can hold about 40-60 players fine without lag and as many plug-ins and as large of a map as I want! if you have any questions feel free to ask me in this thread! (=
