I have made servers before, but hosted it on a PC. Although the PC was very good, *quadcore i5, 8gb ram* my internet is lacking "Being in australia" I thought if moving it to a hosting server. But it was way too expensive, I have a job but even then it is not enough. What ways have you, or would you monetize your server to gain enough revenue to pay the server bills?
I prefer answers of actual things you have done and that worked, but suggestions are nice aslong as you state them as just suggestions.
I know there are donations but just how reliable is that? How generous are people?
You could run some sort of website to the side and try to get a little money through advertising. That's what I do right now, I also accept donations which give users additional privileges.
Yeah, I see. The server I am with, which I moderate has all these ideas put into place. Except the paypal part. We have paypal, but direct bank to bank transfers seems a bit iffy. Anyway, the biggest problem I think is most of our players are in the 13-15 demographic and have no income or control over there spending. $20 to someone working a part time job isn't much, to a 13-15 year old its like what we would see a full days pay as.
Anyone have tips for advertising to older demographics? I am 20 and the oldest person on the server so far as I can tell.
Do you already have enough people to have a lot on at all times?
I have a small server with BeastNode.com, it only holds 12 people at once but its under $10/month. I think it is like $7.85.
You could always start small, we have way more than 12 people that play but between schedules and timezones, everyone that wants to be can be online. Maybe after you do that you'll have someone come on as a partner. If they pay half you could double the size to the point where you have a large enough player group to ask for donations.

We have plenty of players, 20-30 on peak hours, 3-5 on non peak.
I am using beastnode. Im in New Zealand so my internet speed is about the same as yours. I am currently co-owning the server. I got a group of friends together, pitch in a few bucks each and got our server. It is extremely stressful trying to pay for the server on your own. My advise, get a group of friends to help pitch in and co-own the server. You will still be an admin, but just not the only one. This way you get a server, cuts down the price and a few extra hands to help with the server.
I truly recomend BeastNode. Dispite the fact the servers are in america, I dont mind a little lag, the prices are amazing! I am on the Cow Package which is a 24slot server for about $20NZ, something like that, my other friend pays with his visa debit so he has the exact price. We just pay him and he uses his card.
Best of luck man.
If you want to try out my server to see if the lag is ok. Just PM me
There's more servers than people looking for servers. If you work very hard and you are very good, it is possible to make money, but don't get into it expecting anything in return. I suggest you either start out small or get friends to help you pay.

However, never rely on donations to pay for your server. Always be ready to pay out-of-pocket, and don't expect people to donate.
