I've been admin of my server for a while now, but absolutely nothing I do seems to attract people to my server.
I've put it on multiple forum sites and multiple server lists, and told my users to post on them (they're too lazy) but even my previously active members have started to log in less often, possibly due to the fact that it's so boring to be on a server with no people on it.
As far as I know, I've tried everything short of paying for ad space, which I plan to do once I'm done with finals in a couple weeks.
Any ideas on how I can attract people to my server?

A simple domain name will probably help get more people connecting. People are more willing to type in example.com instead of 101.101.101.101 or whatever.
Make it not whitelisted, just a public server. Put the IP in a post on a forum, people dont want to go through the hassle of messaging you to be put on the whitelist. I dont know if you already have it like this, but if you dont you might as well try

Make a professional post with a detailed explanation of your server and what it has to offer with pictures and status graphics. Make sure to highlight key features and perks, like if you have mumble, teamspeak, ventrlio, etc, what type of community you have or want to build, if it's 24/7, that you have a your own forums, and how they can go about joining, etc.
PM me if you want to chat about it, I've helped develop successful servers from the ground up. Having an active post on the Minecraftforums is a key aspect to recruiting new players. As well as having a legitimate respectful administrative base.
Hmm, a domain name, how would I go about getting that? Is it available for a BeastNode server? (We may move on to something more advanced than BeastNode after we get a stronger playerbase, but for now the 30-slot server is way more than we need)
I've got a thread on these forums, but none of my players ever seem to post in it. It's getting to the point where I risk moderator action for bumping the thread if I post any more without someone else popping in... http://www.minecraft...24-spout-mcmmo/
Part of the problem is that servers are a network good, especially when they basis of the server is politics and players interacting with each other in groups. I'll admit, my server's not a whole lot of fun right now, and it's not going to be fun until people actually start showing up to play.
We currently have a whitelist. I'm working on phasing it out in favor of a greylist, since apparently a lot of people are too lazy to write whitelist applications (when I look at the server logs, there's a significant amount of people who try to log on, get rejected due to not being whitelisted, and never return). Unfortunately, I'm terrible with bPermissions and can't get it to work properly, so this may take me a while to get right.
As for our administrative base, we currently have myself and lazyj9. I'm not on as often as I used to be, since I have schoolwork to do (this will end in a couple weeks), but I make sure to check for whitelist applications several times a day and will generally try and check to see if anyone's online every once in a while. We used to have more administrators, but they revolted and attempted to grief the server (these were people that the previous head admin had put into their positions before he disappeared to never come back, as of yet).
