I asked some where else but got ignored,
maybe I posted in the wrong place so ill try here:
A friend of mine has a .com website hosting that he purchased a long time ago.
its his art gallery website.
He told me that if I wanted to have minecraft server installed on his webhosted website,
that I can, and all he would need to do is create a subdomain for me.
I come here asking if this is possible.?
He has unlimited space, unlimited data and unlimited speed as part of his package.
How can this be done and where can I go to get detailed information for dummies on this.??
Mind you this would be the very first time I ever did a server of minecraft.
This would only be set up for me and my daughter and her few friends, about 8 people total.
A webhoster does not usually have the power or software to run a server. His idea does not seem to be accurate. But what he can do with his site is have your server's ip be connected to a link like mc.yourdomain.com so they can use that to connect. That is possible, but it means you still have to get a host.

So he can't make a mc.yourdomain.com and install all the server files for the game.?
because mc.yourdomain.com looks exactly like a subdomain name.
where he makes a name for example abc.yourdomain.com as ABC would be the sub-domain,
and yourdomain.com would be his actual business web address.
sorry if im an idiot, just trying to understand you correctly.
and what do you mean by "A webhoster does not usually have the power or software to run a server."
He is the owner of the website, and he said he can FTP in the server for his website.
and this part confuses me

,
If a webhoster can't run a server, than how do they host?
kind of confuses me.. :blink.gif:

In order to run a server, the host has to have java installed and a way to start that server. A web-site host does not usually have that. They have the ability to run a site, not run a server like Minecraft. Having FTP access does not mean he can run a server. He can store the files there, but cannot run the server. He can use the subdomains to connect to your server, but he cannot use his site to actually host it.
FOR EXAMPE:
I have a site, called www.bukkitserversupport.com. I have FTP access to this site. I am able to upload files to the site's FTP and store them on the site. I cannot tell the site to start the server, nor does it have to computer power to run it.
FTP is File Transfer Protocol, which deals with the transfer of files, that is the extend of it. Not actually running them.
i would go with port forwarding instead of hamachi (my opinion)
another thing is even if you got it to work i doubt the webhost would be that happy. It is unlikly that a website how would allow it to be used for that, i know some have limits to the kind of things you can run. It also depends on the ram used.
so the only single way I can have a server is buying a new computer and installing hamachi on it and placing the server files in that new computer.
thats the only way.??
How do other people have .com minecraft servers ?
They bought a domain thru a host, and set up an A-record, which allows for people to use that link to connect to the IP. The domain cannot host the server, only act as a director to the server.
Like a guide. The company owns the guide, who points you to the monument (which is the server). The company does not control it, just point people to it.
