When I use rkit to start it up, it's something closer to this (rkit config line, this basically overrides the wimpy auto config and starts it with this line).
EDIT: First line is what I use for a small dev server, second line is what I used back when I ran OverDrive, you can set the memory allocated to whatever you want... I think I allocated 2GB to the MCHG server.

Keep in mind, I've been using this since the beginning and the following things have changed since then:
Moved from 2.2 dual core to 3.2 tri-core (I know number of cores doesnt matter)
Moved from 4GB to 8GB
Moved MC world directory to a 4GB RAMdisk mount
So...should I tweak anything in the string above?
