So yesterday i created my own server because some of my friends bought minecraft. Everything works fine for me, but none of them can connect. The most likely explanation is that i have not port forwarded 25565 on my router, or it could just be that all my friends have wierd firewalls in place. The real problem with this is that i do not have access to my router. I live in a college dorm, and have no clue where the physical router for my floor is, what brand/model it is, and i doubt i could even gain access to it if i knew how to get to it. On my home comp, i just went to my default gateway and the router was right there. Is there any way i can port forward without access to a router? If not, that sucks a lot.
Yep, from something like a college dorm, you can't.
Things you could do:
[*]run a hamachi server, then tell your friends to get hamachi as well to play on it - there are good instructions on youtube and such
[*]host it somewhere else (not on campus) - for example, I live in a dorm and so I can't host a server here - but I still have my computer at my house and run the server there. (I don't recommend this really, it just worked out in my case)
[*]have each of your friends pitch in a couple bucks and buy server hosting. It's reliable and not expensive if you split the cost up.
But yeah, its bummer, I know what you mean about not being able to host it normally.
