Hey everyone. I'm curious what you guys are seeing for CPU usage on your hosted servers. If you could, please list the socket/chip you're using and at what frequency, the highest number of players you've hosted, and the highest CPU usage you've seen from the Minecraft Server.
Intel Pentium D 805 / Socket 775 @ 2.67GHz
2GB DDR2-667
Server 2008 x64
I'm seeing spikes to 100% (and block respawning/lag) when I've got 4-5 people connected and somebody is exploring and generating terrain, less than that number of people and no issues/lag with exploring. Usually with my maximum player count (8 people building, not exploring) I sit around 70-80% CPU usage, and considering we're about to have more people logging in, I don't think I can handle the increased load. RAM is always under 70% usage. I'm more than aware that my aging server is behind the curb on performance (the 805 was the first dual core Intel released, and it's basically two P4's duct-taped together using the fantastically inferior Netburst architecture), so I'm considering dropping the coin on a new setup. I'm particularly interested in anyone running anything Sandy Bridge, or even a 1156 i3 with a high clock speed. My board doesn't support anything beyond the Pentium D so I might as well drop socket 775 all together since I'd need a new motherboard for anything Core2 anyways.
