Find the IP of your server host or your router, type it into the address bar, then go to the correct options and menus to forward ports.
Forward the ports that your minecraft server would be. This is usually 25565, but you can change it with the server.properties file. Just do this :
1.)change it to server.properties.txt
2.) change the port option to whatever you want.
3.) set the port you want forwarded to the same number.
It should work now! Report back here with any findings you get.
any menu with the words "port" and "forwarding" that are used in the same sentence is definitely the correct menu. make sure you set "25565" in both boxes and then set it to use both in the TCP/UDP section. enable it and save and quit. when you tell a friend to connect to your server just tell him to put a ":25565" including the colon at the end of your IP.
EDIT: if you have trouble connecting the default command to get into your router is usually "192.168.0.1" and press enter in your browser bar. if it asks for a username and password type admin on both boxes

To check your intnal ip address go to search and try in run and click run. In the run box type cmd and hit enter which should bring up the comand window. In it type ipconfig and look under the ethernet adapter and then the number right of default gateway should be your internal ip address. The way to set up the sever still varies depending on your rounter and i recommend http://portforward.com/ To help find what you need hit Ctrl+F and type in what your trying to find in the box.
I have a 2wire1701hg. (:

See if they have your model of router on there. I would help further, but you have not said the model number or brand of the router.
Also, in the future ask in the support section.
Also to check to see if you have connecting to the site go to http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/
