I'm having a terrible time trying to set up a Bukkit server - It's okay with two people in it, but as soon as the third enters it starts lagging horribly and task manager shows java.exe as using up to 80% CPU - I have an i5-750, this shouldn't be happening.
I have tried dedicating more RAM, reinstalling Java, using the x86 and x64 versions, running a clean bukkit server with no plugins, using several different builds of bukkit, and nothing helps.
Please, somebody give me a hand here!

Changing between x86/x64 isn't going to help you at all. Are you running a 64bit version of Windows? If so, you'll need to use the x64 startup options. If you have 32bit Windows, you'd use the x86 option.
How much memory are you using to start up the server?
I've heard some people saying that just adding craftbukkit to their fresh vanilla install is causing some major issues. Since craftbukkit isn't complete yet I'd say it's safe to say your issues lie with that.
Just confirmed that good ol' regular minecraftserver.jar from minecraft.net in a new server does the exact same thing! I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, and have tried using 1 and 2 gigs of RAM, with absolutely no difference.
It's not a bukkit problem since it does the same thing with the regular server.
Yes, I am running the client and server on the same computer and it should be perfectly capable of handling that. Even if it weren't, I did think of that and got three friends to join without me being there, which did the exact same thing (70-80% CPU usage, terrible delays and lag).
Have you tried running the exe instead of the jar? Do you encounter the same issues with that?
Keep in mine Minecraft is still beta and almost everyone I've helped has had issues with running the server and client on the same PC, no matter how fast their computers were. Some do, some don't but I generally think of it as something that causes issues.
If you have 64bit Windows then you'll only want to start the server with the x64 version of the .bat file used to start up. Can you post the code from your .bat startup file?
As I said, it still happens if I'm not running the client at the same time as the server so that's not the cause. I just tried the .exe and same thing, 70-80% CPU usage.
I assume you have uninstalled and entirely reinstalled the latest version of java? Had to do that on my g/f's computer over the weekend because minecraft started freezing randomly.
How much RAM do you actually have? I've had issues with it using more than you allocate and it ends up using swap space (or pagefile if you're on Windows).

My friend just tried hosting with his computer that is largely the same as mine, and he gets 14-28% cpu usage and it doesn't increase much at all with more players. And he's playing on the same machine so I'm very confused.
I host a server on my laptop and run minecraft on it to at the same time. Seeing as my laptop is 2 years and its managing to run both never stops to amaze me! It goes through laggy phases only when im playing but apart from that its ok. I only wish there some server software that didn't run java....
Actually the process my friend was looking at that was using 14-24% of the CPU was javaw.exe, which is the game, the server was using less than 10% at all times! We were blowing everything up! Why the hell can't I run a server?
Seems most every option anyone here knows has been exhausted.. there's probably some underlying issue with your system that is causing this to happen that can't be pinpointed without being on the system.

That's the code you'll want to use if you're running 64bit Windows. There's a bunch more info on getting things running right here: http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/faq-2- ... erver.462/
Other than that I'm not really sure.
