I'm guessing they actually have two machines networked together that just use the same files for the world for both versions. Either that, or its a lot of custom coding. Or one could be on a virtual machine. Are the players who are playing with different versions actually playing at the same time?
I think he's asking how to make it so that players on version 1.6.4 and 1.7 can join the exact same server. It's not possible, but it might be in the future.
You can run (in theory only) two servers off the same machine. You just have to change the port number of one of the servers. They could then both be running from the same root world save. However you could not keep the same world save once the servers went online because they would be trying to read/write to the same file at the same time and it would all come to a crashing train wreck eventually.
Besides that any time a new fetcher from 1.7 showed up on the 1.6 world (let alone the fact that the terrain generator is completely different) the 1.6 client would have a mental breakdown.
If updates were backwards compatible, we would not be waiting for servers to update. 1.6 and 1.7 are completely different programs according to computers.
Most likely they have two servers, one for 1.6 and one for 1.7. They are not connected or shared. If I'm wrong, I want to see it, cause that is some wickedly good programming.
i would really like to know how to run a server that works with 1.6.4 and 1.7.2 on 1 server at the same time like hivemc
Please let me know i would be very happy
pretty sure they have 2 different servers running at the same time. and right now 1.7.2 isnt even worth getting it doesnt exist unless it is vanilla or say that completely broken and unstable spigot version. which is just a patch that allows for 1.7.2 clients to connect to it. so it really isnt 1.7.2 its still 1.6.4 because all of the new stuff is not in it. it would be better to just stick to 1.6.4 until a stable version is released. but as to how they managed it maybe they patched their jars as well. they have been making custom things for a LONG time
There are servers like this using Bungee Cord+Spigot with custom plugins. In reality, the 1.7.2 blocks are not there, the 1.7.2 features are not there. It's just a 1.6.4 server disguised as 1.7.2 to 1.7.2 people and 1.6.4 to 1.6.4 people

If you mean that you want players from a 1.7.2 client to be able to log into ur server whilst the world is still 1.6.4 then u have to download the spigot 1.7.2.jar file im not sure why people are not recommending it, i use it on my server and i find it good, but anyway the new spigot 1.7jar is out now which allows minecraft servers to include the new biomes and the new blocks
youre talking about an old spigot build. that specific build was released because people were asking for it and spigot said sure here it is but it is completely unstable and unsupported it was also only a patch the world and engin the server ran on was 1.6.4 but people could log on with a 1.7.2 client. now though there are still more better dev build from bukkit and spigot but again are still unsopported.
