Ok. So I have actually been messing around with different Minecraft servers so I know some on how they work. The problem I'm facing is that I'm a totally clueless noob when it come to what an ok server computer need to run a server well when you've stuffed it full with modifications.
As it is now I thought I skip the hosted servers and just put together a server of my own but if I buy a server It be swell to know it could actually handle any players without breaking/lagging down.
Some info (I've heard that helps ):
The minecraftserver will be running MCPC-plus v1.6.4 with the following mods:
I've already managed to make these mods work well together using my home-pc as server and I hope all the recources used by so many different entities will be ok considering I don't use any machine-mods. (No pipes and stuff like that)
Since I'll be running MCPC-plus I'll also be using quite a bunch of bukkit plugins as well. Mostly to protect against griefing and for stats/achievements etc. These will need a MySQL database so the server will also run a wamp(ish) web/mysql server (the "ish" is because I haven't desided if I'll run Win Server or Linux).
I have a bought pro edition of McMyAdmin that will handle the basic things on the server.
All this is what will be on the server software-vise and I know this is quite a lot (or is it?).
When it come to the hardware, that's where I'm totally lost. I have no idea what-so-ever to what will run this. I'm not looking at buying a super-expensive (does it spell that way) server, I'm not very rich.
So two questions about server is what you thing I'll need to run a server with all this. I would like the server to be able to handle 40-50 players. My internet connection is no problem since it's 1GBit both ways.
I have been looking at cheap servers and found this Fujitsu PRIMERGY TX100 S3P Xeon E3-1220 which didn't seem to expensive. But since I have not one single clue on what a server need to run Minecraft after you've added all the mods (beside a bunch of mem), I need someone wise to tell me if I this is a good enought server or point me in the right direction for one.
If anyone could help me out I'd be really grateful. Heck, if you read all this I'm grateful.
From what I see the server seems nice, would be better with a couple of SSDs in there, would allow faster reading and writing. In my opinion I'd only buy a server if I'm looking to run BIG and know it will be worth it.
Well. SSD's is something that will be added later if I'll get this.
About running it big. I run a small server for fun and a couple of friends that play with me offered to buy the server for me so why not?
Another friend works with renting out servers to companies and offered me a place for the server at his company so server + 1gig internet at a serverhost for free. Just want to make sure the thing can run a server before I accept their offer. ^^
