My friend is getting a new computer and we need to make sure we can play LAN (local area network) games together. So can a Mac and a PC (HP, Dell, etc.) play on a LAN server together?
Thank you.
If both systems use tcp/IP they should be able to work. With the proper router hardware they wouldn't even have to be on Ethernet... One could be using Token Ring, for example, as long as it was still tcp/IP.
The only way it wouldn't work is if the Mac could only run AppleTalk, and I don't even know if Apple still supports it.

No modern system uses token ring. No modern computer would even know what to do if connected to a token ring without a lot of configuration. A router is not necessary for a LAN, only a hub or switch. TCP/IP is the only way to communicate these days unless using a switch which can run off MAC addresses alone, but even then it still functions in the same manner as TCP.
The more accurate answer would be you have to be on the same logical network, which 99.99% of all home LANs are. The only exception is if you specifically do something to alter this, which few know how, or would want/need to do.

lololol welcome to 2013 token rings havent been around for the last 30 years or so. there are alot more modern efficient ways of connection to a computer. without a router now a days to connect to a computer like that you could just use direct connect and a network hub.

Finding a hub these days is very difficult. Switches are the standard these days.
For just 2 computers, you can use any old ethernet cable. Don't thing a crossover is necessary anymore as most systems can detect and electronically switch the necessary wires.

Thank you.
This. If you're on the same internet, it should be possible.
