Hello all! I am going to be building a server here soon, not specifically for Minecraft but just for general purpose. I am in college for computer networking, and we are getting into Linux (finally), which I absolutely love. But the stuff they teach is way out of my depth, and the best way for me to learn something is to incorporate video games into it.
I work on top of college, and I make pretty good money. Even so, my budget has to be less than 1200. I am going to be running Voltz (a Tekkit mod), on it. I have ran it in the past with a little desktop I converted into a server, and it handled 10 people well, it handles large amount of red matter\anti matter bombs pretty good as well.
On a tangent, (optional read) I did a stress test on it and detonated multiple anti matter bombs, me and a friend trying to get it to crash. Like, in the hundreds of anti matter bombs, and red matter. It didn't crash it! What did crash it, I found out, was the Obsidian TNT. It is because it drops a ton of entities (items), where the anti matter just takes the blocks away, and the red matter for the most part as well. Yet it always seems like when I purchase hosting, one anti matter will always crash it, and the server has better specs\more RAM than my home PC? Crappy hosting, or most likely a result of a server running multiple OS in VMWare of some sort.
So this is what I had in mind so far; and keep in mind I have almost no experience with building servers except what I have googled so far. I am pretty experienced with gaming desktops.
First some questions I have about the requirements.
1. How well does Minecraft in general utilize multiple cores?
2. I want to be hosting a large scale server, talking 150+ people on a heavily modded server. I have a business class connection, so bandwidth won't be a problem. How much RAM am I going to want? The mobo I am looking at has a top capacity of 512GB, which I am pretty damn sure will be enough. (Newegg Link) EDIT: After looking at the prices to fully equip the server with 512GB of memory, I don't think I can afford the 11 thousand dollar price tag. So, definitely not going to fully equip that 512GB of RAM, unless I become a millionaire. Thinking more along the lines of 64-128GB of RAM, @1300? Finding good amount of the memory on craigslist.
3. As for the processor, I am looking at a quad core, but the answer to #1 may change that. What would you recommend? (Newegg Link)
Those are the only questions I can think of right now. I thank anybody who read through that, and is going to productively help me. I don't know if any professional hosting admins troll these forums, but if you are one, and you are reading this, maybe you can help me out? Again, thank you!
1. It doesn't. It's that bad.
2. I believe it's about 2GB for 20 players (without lag.) For heavy modded, lets assume it'll be 3GB. Thus 150players/20 = 7.5. You will need about 32 gigs of ram for the server. Just to be safe, you should look at 64 gigs, but my server (pretty heavy modded) runs fine with 20 players and only has 2GB.
3. If you are hosting multiple servers, quad core, otherwise two core.
Thanks!
That puts a kink in my plans, Minecraft not playing nice with multiple threads. And as for the memory, I think I will start out with 48 or 64, maybe 96, depending on what I can get, then upgrade it over time based on need. For the CPU, I am going to have to get either a dual core, or a more powerful quad core. I think I may just go with the more powerful quad core, just because I am going to be running multiple things on this server. It also totally rules out an 8 core CPU. I don't suppose they are going to remedy this in the future? Is it a Java problem, or just the way the game was designed?
Thanks!

If you'll be using BungeeCord, that's multithreaded I believe. At this point you'd be best going with an E3v3 processor and 32GB of RAM at first, with an SSD or multiple SSDs in RAID.

I like your idea of going with E3v3 CPU's. My only concern is this multi-threading issue. Is there a better processor, for servers, that you can over clock? I am going to want a lot of power, I know from experience Voltz is very intensive. I played in a Voltz server for a while that had 250 player limit, and when it got 200 players on there it was lagging so bad. I know when I built a gaming PC with 3570k, I could overclock that b*^#@ to 4.7GHz on a really good after market cooler.
I don't plan on running multiple servers, I have a dream... (haha) of one big server where there is absolutely no rules you can break, except hacking\glitches. The rest will be enforced by addons.
Very few hosts are going to allow you to overclock your server...
Also, you will not be able to hold that many people on one server, eventually you'll have to use multiple servers.

I respectfully disagree, since I stated in my original post I am my own host. And I do what I want
Also, people have ran a 250+ Voltz server like the one I have in mind in the past, without major issues. The only issues it had was Tekkit plugins not functioning properly, since they were blazing the path for servers to come, as far as the amount of players.

Even if you are your own host, what's your internet speed?
My internet speed is absolutely no issue, I live in a basement under a hosting company. The owner of the hosting company is my dad, so I have a high speed line going to my apartment right after demarcation point.
generally not much (or none at all) OC support on server boards.
A few years ago Intel did release the dualcore X5698 Westmere Xeon skt1366 factory clocked @4.4GHz w/12Mcache

Just wow. I may have to start saving for that. And you are right, I'll bet that would run Minecraft servers so good. Only problem is the price
Edit:
aww and it is x86 based.
Aww that isn't a very good text limit. Nevermind, won't post all the parts. I found what I am going to get though, it is a lot over my budget, decimates it but I decided I don't want to do something half assed, when for a couple more months of saving I could have gotten exactly what I wanted, which is http://www.mediafire.com/view/avckyoczbfm7oql/Cart_Item_List.pdf
The server parts anyway, the rest of it is just a really big want

that will give a huge performance boost

I forgot about that aspect completely, thank you!

Yes That's true. SSD is 10 times faster than HDD. I also installed HPE P04560-B21 for my server and it is super fast. I am happy with the boot time.
You will really need a powerful server. I must say you should go with a DDR 5 RAM NVME SSD and Intel SR1XD Processor
