its only the login for some reason but this means no multiplayer until they fix it but u can still play offline but whitout ur skin
Yup. Login servers are down, thus single-player is the only option. No multiplayer because you can't authenticate your account until the login servers are back up. The website also goes down occasionally, but it's only Minecraft.net, not the entire Mojang network.
it's not just lately. It's always had issues because Mojang would rather go home and sleep than give customers any sort of good service. they even give people crap for asking them about things over twitter. bunch of s. It'll be a while till it's fixed since they wont ever setup redundant servers to use when primary servers go down. why don't they have servers that can handle the userload they have? it's not like they don't know how many copies of the game they've sold so they can be prepared for high capacity.

You figure that it's nearly 2am in Sweden. Not everything is going to get fixed instantly especially considering it's late at night.

First instance I've actually seen of the login servers going down. It just happened to be remarkably good timing since Gmail went down earlier this afternoon, and Facebook was down for a good 10 minutes or so. I doubt they're related though -- the Facebook outage was assumed to be a DDoS attack due to the privacy policy voting. I'm sure Mojang will straighten this out eventually.
I'm honestly not the least bit angry at Mojang. They work.. Fairly hard on this game and the few times it crashes it's up within a few hours. They weren't expecting minecraft to be such a huge success.

Well, the one guy who mentioned how Mojang just doesn't care and rather sleep?
I do somewhat agree. This game has been popular for months now, and it's popularity keeps growing. I will not stop supporting Minecraft due to my love towards the game, but it should be fully realized servers need some sort of changing.
Some sort of upgrading should be done by now, so it can stay stable. I'm not going to claim they don't work hard, but an update in server stability is long over-due.
Yes, you do have instant support and server fixes at 2:00 AM in Sweden if you're a multi-million(billion?) dollar company. I know much much smaller companies who provide near-instant fixes for stuff like this, Mojang has just seen minecraft as a done deal or something I guess...

This is a really baseless statement. I don't think you understand Mojang's infrastructure anywhere near well enough to say you know what fixing "stuff like this" actually takes. Mojang won't pretend to know how to do your job, and you probably shouldn't pretend to know how to do theirs. Let's be fair please.

This is pointless venom because you're mad you can't log in. I understand, but the fact that they are having a technical problem for a game which is actually hilariously stable, is no reason to call them a bunch of sell-out care-nothings.

According to the Minecraft homepage, 8286600+ people have bought minecraft (this used to be a live counter, I've noticed they've now reduced it to a once-a-second counter how sad)
For sake of argument let's round it off to 8.287M.
Minecraft is ~$27 USD right now, but considering it hasn't always been that much let's set Minecraft's value-per-game at an arbitrary value, say $22.50 USD (a pretty reasonable [IMO] mix of alpha, beta & release pricing)
That's a cool $186,457,500 USD they've pulled in so far, plus merchandising royalties, minecon, etc.
I'm a bit confused?

It's been down for a couple hours. Just be patient and stop complaining, you can still play single-player until the servers are back up.

I'd reckon they should be able to have some sort of fix for this
Might as well watch the staff twitter feed, Dinnerbone's feed, and of course (as they suggested) the all-gratifying help page.
