I'm making a custom modpack and I'm having some pretty spectacular crash issues.. It happens mostly when I try to use NEI.. I'll try your trick and see if it works. If not, I'll be coming back for more help, you mark my words! >:3
Blech.. I don't get it.. I tried using -Xmx2G -Xms512M -XX:PermGen=1024m on my other machine but my minecraft wouldn't even launch, but on my work machine it works fine?
Glad it finally worked out for you...I'm still not using the new launcher, either, as I'm still on 1.5.2 and using MultiMC...no new Thaumcraft and thermal expansion yet, but good to know the new launcher finally makes it easier to add additional arguments
you are welcome
how would you apply this to a server. Im running a server on mac OSX and no matter what i do i always get warnings and crashes in console. This is the launch file:
#!/bin/bash
USER=macdja38
PASS=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
##YOU SHOULD NOT NEED TO EDIT ANYTHING BELOW THIS LINE##
DIRECTORY=$(cd "`dirname "$0"`" && pwd)
(cd "$DIRECTORY"; java -Xmx256M -Xms30M -XX:PermSize=256m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m -jar Minecraft_RKit.jar ${USER}:${PASS})
in console however it still says permgen size is smaller than 128M
Rusty thank you in advance for helping me and all these other people, but do you have experience with the FTB launcher? I am using custom modified modpacks, is this line of code the same thing as going to options in the launcher and increasing maximum ram? also a little of topic can you get this crash if you allocate too much ram to minecraft and it tries to use that ram but it is being used by other non minecraft things? because either i dont have enough ram or i'm over allocating... in either case will this fix help me? and if so how would i use it on a custom launcher? ty for help!
EDIT: literally right after i posted this i saw advanced options and an option to add additional java parameters (some fancy jargon like that), testing it now. Was able to generate an "Alternate Terrain Generation" world with "Biomes O' Plenty" biomes on extreme render distances from optifine as well as generating "Better dungeons" dungeons, and "Doomlike" Dungeons. this is amazing. please re-read the first sentence!!!!

Curiosity, does this fix work with the technic launcher?
For 1.6.4 I found that this works well, I know the 3Gs is unnessisary but since I don't plan on running a Server with 100 plugins I thought why not put that lazy 2.5G to good use: -Xmx3G -Xms3G -XX:PermSize=1G -XX:MaxPermSize=3G tell me if this helps...

Also never use millionair and better dungeons at once

In your case, try Xmx2G -Xms512M -XX:PermSize=1024m -XX:MaxPermSize=2048m.
Should work. And the m's at the end of the PermSIze things HAVE to be lowercased.

Dragon(s) Yay!
adding few letters to launcher make minecraft smooth with 50mods like clean vanilla...;pp
