Hi, My son has signed into Minecraft today and is very upset that it looks totally different from yesterday. I do not know if it has updated or something but I would really like any advice on how to get yesterdays version back. Thank you
Well... this is going to either teach your son patience... or you and he will be finding a different game to play.
SOMEBODY at Microsoft/Mojang... thought that it would be "cool" to update and change the TEXTURES... the patterns drawn on every block in Minecraft.
I saw this a few weeks ago in the "SNAPSHOT" which the Java edition players get a chance to choose to play, to see proposed new features of the game ahead of time. The new texture patterns are SO BAD I signed up to the forums to voice my objection to them.
It looks like no one listened.
How they think the carrots and potatoes look "BETTER" is beyond me. And the watermelons... I've NEVER seen a yellow and green striped watermelon.
So your son and my son, and myself, and ALL the other people who had NO PROBLEM with the "old" textures... now are STUCK with these badly designed patterns... until Microsoft / Mojang decides to change them back.
You and your son COULD buy a license for the Java version... then on a computer... you can play any of these old versions found archived here:
But the Windows 10, Xbox, phone PE, etc... versions... those are all tied to the "official" release of Minecraft and are subject to the whims of whomever is making the business decisions at Microsoft / Mojang.
Sorry this won't be any comfort for your son... but this is what happened.
They changed the "textures" (patterns on each block) in version 1.10 of the "Bedrock" Windows 10 / XBox / PE / everything-but-Java edition of Minecraft.
1.09 has the old "textures"... but only the Java edition players get to choose to play older or newer editions.
ANOTHER CHOICE is to change your settings and choose an OPTIONAL / ALTERNATE set of "textures" that you will probably have to buy / pay for, although occasionally some are free.
They're planning on making higher defintion graphics an option too... but that isn't ready yet. But you see some of this already when you browse the OPTIONAL / ALTERNATE "skins" for the player character. MAYBE we will get to choose the old textures again... someday.
FYI... the version numbers between Java edition, and all the Bedrock editions do not align.
1.09 Bedrock is like 1.13 Java
1.10 & 1.11 Bedrock will be 1.14 Java
Java has snapshots between 1.13 and 1.14 that show the changes 1.10 and 1.11 will bring to Bedrock.
Get the Java version to be able to control what your Minecraft looks like... OR buy the optional/alternative textures in the Bedrock (all other editions) of Minecraft.
Thank you very much for your reply. I did do quite a bit of internet searching before I came on to this forum and did find some information saying there is to be change/update to merge textures into one style/format, so you have just confirmed the worse thing for me. My Son hates them. He is really upset. He got his Xbox for Christmas and has made so many worlds and now, as far as he is concerned the game is ruined. He has not played it today.
I have got it on the Laptop and that is still in the nice style so I am sure he will play it on there, although of course all his worlds are on the Xbox. Crazy.
Thank you again. You have saved me hours looking for a way to get it back to the old style when it appears we are stuck with it. Like you say, time for a new game.
