Would this maybe explain why I've been having issues when playing on LAN with others seeing my skin?
When I play single-player, I see my skin fine. If I open to LAN, I see my skin fine. I see others' skins fine. However, they see me as Steve (often with the head backwards for some reason). It's been frustrating me.
I thought it was my skin so I tried re-uploading my skin countless times and even trying different skins, and the results are the same.
My nephew hosted a LAN game for his friend once, and the same thing happened to him as the host. He could see his friend's skin, but his friend saw him as Steve. He saw his own skin just fine though.
I can't recall for sure, but this seems to have started around the time we updated to 1.7.5, and it persisted in 1.7.9, and it's still persisting in 1.7.10 right now. Whenever any of us host an LAN game (it's usually me because that's where our world resides), the host shows up as Steve for everyone else but themself. Am I ever going to have my skin back for anyone but myself?
Same issue at my house. My companion opens her minecraft to LAN and I join her. She see's my skin and hers fine. I can see my own skin but she shows as steve. This happens on 1.7.10 all the time. When we played 1.7.2 we were fine,
It's only an issue with LAN mode as a host for me. In single-player and multi-player it otherwise works fine. I haven't heard much about it and am hoping whatever is causing it gets changed and/or resolved soon, as it's been an issue for a while now (since approximately 1.7.5).
I just added in my third skin to my minecraft character. the first time i did it, it was with the older version of needcoolshoes.com, and it worked great, But i tried to make a new one, and only the head registered in game. So i made another one, but the problem was reversed. Everything but my head showed up. The first time it happened my body was all black, now my head is all white. Any suggestions?
This is NOT a bug, not a server (vanilla or bukkit etc) defect, it is deliberate and intentional. The server you're trying to connect to must be in offline mode. As of 1.7.9, in preperation for 1.8 and the new naming system (UUID instead of username) they ALSO apparently are preventing offline mode servers from using the skins. I can see the point, to an extent, but sadly, from personal experience many servers run in offline mode for testing plugins, which as they've been churning out Minecraft updates left and right, sadly has left many constantly testing and working with dev's of plugins to get things going for the new version, etc.
You are a lifesaver. I have been all over the internet since 1.7.9 came out, trying to figure out just what the heck happened to skins. This is exactly what happened. Nasty thing to do to all the people running in offline mode. I haven't seen any problems with the changeover to online mode yet, except for it wiping my inventory.
Is there a specific reason that I'm not seeing behind Mojang changing this?
I recently updated to Minecraft 1.7.9, and I immediately had an issue.
I couldn't see any skins! I tweeted at @MojangSupport and I stated: "Me and my friends were playing together, and I could see my skin but no one else."
They said back, "I am sorry, but I cannot assist you on this."
So I just went back to playing, and not seeing anyone's custom skins.
After a little while I was talking about it and we all concluded that I should try downgrading from 1.7.9, because it had worked right before I had updated.
So I downgraded all the way to 1.7.4, and I logged back in to the server I was previously on. I could see skins again!
I tweeted at @MojangSupport to tell them how I resolved, and they said, "I am glad it got resolved and sorry for the inconvenience I will look into it later."
So if you are having a problem seeing other people skins, and you are on 1.7.9; I recommend you downgrade to the last one it worked in. That is what worked for me and everyone else I was playing with.
I hope this helps anyone else that is having this bizarre bug. Have fun playing guys, and please reply and tell me if this fixed it for you!
EDIT: In some testing me and my friends have done; we have found that it is not a bug. Servers that are not updated to 1.7.9 do not communicate properly to the Skin Servers, and we assume that is because they have started integration for the new skin models in 1.8. I do not, however, understand why downgrading to below 1.7.9 fixes this problem. It is a very weird solution, but it is a solution.

Until someone ports this legendary mod I am leaving the minecraft scene. http://www.cosc.canterbury.ac.nz/greg.ewing/minecraft/mods/ArchitectureCraft/#mozTocId598776 I have watched too many legendary mods die and carpenters blocks sudden fallout out of mainstream made me cry. I realize the source is messy but some of the best mods from 1.6.4 and 1.7.10 were.
I used cracked clients before I bought it and honestly if I hadn't I would never have bought it because I only buy great software.
