Be easy on my guy, I'm still new to this game. I tried to load up my multiplayer minecraft server and it told me that it's outdated. What does the mean? Will I ever be able to play on the server again, is will it make me start all over with my friends? if that's the case then that sucks, I've got a ton of stuff done and work put into my server and I hope to be able to play it again. Please help.
Is it your server or just the server you play on? If it's your server you need to update it. If it's just the one you play on don't worry. The server owner will update soon enough and you WILL be able to play again.
EDIT: I just got ninja'd twice....
it's my server...so how would I go about updating it?
go to minecraft.net, click downloads. download the latest .jar or .exe (depends on which type you use) and replace the old one with it.

Copy and paste the new server.jar on top of the old one.
I always use craftbukkit, so what I would do is grab the newest craftbukkit file (let's just call it craftbukkit_1_2_R2.jar), rename it 'craftbukkit.jar', and copy-paste it over the old one.
The reason why you cannot connect to the server is that the server is outdated as they retained being in 1.8 or lower. I think you are using the 1.9 or higher trying to connect that server.

The same is happening to me and my cousin! We both have version 0.14.1 and they are up to date but we get the same message
This is PC version. Not PE(?) version. No one can help you.
At the time of the OP, 1.2.4 had just been released. So it's likely the server was still running 1.2.3.
