If you just downgraded to 1.8.9 in order to play on a server (after having played a newer version) the issue is likely due to running in the same game directory as a newer version (either due to options.txt or if it only happens with Optifine, optionsof.txt) - never, ever do that! Always create a new installation with its own game directory when playing anything but the latest version (or at least more than one version. Some 3rd party launchers even appear to enforce separate game directories).

Thanks in advance[/pre]
Delete the options.txt and test it again

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
