I have been playing Minecraft on my 16" i9 MacBook Pro since I bought it about 9 months ago. Once it's started, it works really well. However, I often have to start it 4 or 5 times as it crashes regularly just before it goes full screen with the red Mojang splash screen.
When I initially installed Minecraft, my MBP was almost brand new and I hadn't installed Java separately. I did later install the latest version of Java from Oracle but I don't know which version Minecraft is now using nor whether this is a factor.
Does Minecraft launch reliably for other Mac users? If so, are you using the built-in version of Java?
I haven't seen any other reports of my problem but my Mac is and always has been fully up to date so that isn't the issue. I may try to uninstall Minecraft and reinstall it. It may recognise that I already have Oracle Java installed and use that although I have no idea whether that is the cause of the problem.

If it would be a general Mac issue, there would've been a lot more support requests here...
