so this problem is a bit interesting, i can't get vanilla minecraft to run under 4 gigabytes of allocated ram,
even on render distance set to 2 it still uses about 4300 mb, but the wierdest thing is, if i set reneder distance to 32,
it still uses the same 4300 mb of ram, nothing i seem to do changes it, everything from 5 gb to 24 gb of allocated ram, still uses 4300 mb
and it gets even wierder when i use optifine, it runs on 4gb allocated but still uses about 3500 mb no matter the rendering distance or other settings,
but if i set the allocated ram higher, the actual ram usage follows, so if i set the allocated ram to 12 gb the usage goes to 11 gb, again no matter the rendering distance
limiting framerate also doesn't change it, its something deeper than that
pc specs
intel i9 9900k
nvidia rtx 2080
48 gigabytes of ram

screenshot at render distance 2 vanilla, although if i leave the game open it can even go over 5 gb it seems
Any changes if you play in windowed mode with a smaller window?
nope, this was screenshot in windowed anyway, but smaller and fullscreen doesn't change anything
Maybe it has something to do with your Desktop resolution
For testing, you can change the resolution from 2k to 1k
ok, this is wierd, changing my desktop res didn't do anything,
but the whole problem went away as soon as i changed the resolution in launcher settings from auto to what i have
now it runs perfectly using just under 3gb on optifine with 32 render distance and a 256 texture pack
i think the automatic resolution in mc just freaked out or something
