Recently I switched from 1.15.2 to 1.8.9, and one thing i noticed that in 1.8, the 2 buttons on the side of my mouse which are supposed to be buttons 4 and 5 enter as button 3 if i try to change the controls. This problem is affecting my pvp as i played with these side buttons for as long as i can remember.
That thread wouldn't work anyway since you can't manually update LWJGL with the current launcher, at least not without a lot of work (it will simply redownload the original files due to a checksum mismatch) and the last comment says that 2.9.0 fixes the issue, which is an older version than what 1.8.9 uses (note the date of the thread), and according to this bug report issues with mouse buttons 4/5 were fixed in the first snapshot for 1.13, which updated the game to LWJGL3, which is completely different internally from LWJGL2 so it isn't possible to update unless the game itself is rewritten. The only other thing I found was an old Reddit thread where somebody replied with a couple utilities that you have to pay for (but you can test them for free, there may be similar utilities that are free).

It could be entirely caused by how mac computers work, but I'm not sure. Anyways I would suggest moving away from Apple, or at least using a VM, as their OpenGL support was dropped a few years ago (and now they're trying to switch to ARM) so it's only a matter of time until Minecraft stops working entirely for the MacOS userbase.

Upon research, I found one particular thread that wouldve helped if i was on windows, but unfortunately I play on a mac. https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/support/java-edition-support/1871632-side-mouse-button-problems-support
Any help would be appreciated.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

I have a few friends that play on windows and when I questioned them about it they told me that they had the same issue.
so possibly a GLFW or LWJGL issue.
