I wonder if anyone has any advice for this. I tried to find this elsewhere and I've checked out other forums, and nothing has helped. I've been playing MineCraft Java Edition for years, left it, and came back to it a little over a year ago. I had no problems until the 1.14.3 update. Then, once in a while, the screen would freeze, a snippet of whatever sound effect was playing would repeat over and over for a minute or so, and then the system would reboot. When I say the screen would freeze, I mean: no mouse movement, no response to keyboard and any other apps with updating windows (e.g. System Monitor) stopped too. No ability to drop into a TTY screen, or initiate a graceful shutdown. As time has gone on, it's been happening more frequently. Now it happens pretty much every day, often several times a day if I give it a chance.
I mostly play on a fairly well-developed world (I wondered if maybe the large file-size) but it happens on brand-new worlds I've just started. It's happened in the Overworld, The Nether and The End. It's happened when I was looking up at the sky, looking down from a great distance and just looking at my feet, in a small room, with no fancy Red Stone or lots of mobs. It's happened after hours of play and also within seconds of the world loading.
I've reduced my render distance, reduced other video settings, increased RAM settings. I have the latest Launcher and version of Minecraft (1.14.4), no mods. I use the version of Java bundled with MineCraft. I've re-installed MineCraft and the Launcher.
I run Linux Mint Mate 18.3 (64-bit) on a system with an AMD FX-8370 Eight-Core Processor and 16 GB of DDR3 RAM. I have an NVidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti video card, and I use the latest proprietary driver for it. I'm also using the latest microcode driver for my CPU. I've checked harddrive integrity. There is over 600 GB free space and I do have a swap partition which is comfortably larger than what was recommended to create. I can't for the life of me get MemTest86+ to run but no other game, art program or video crashes the computer. The system only crashes when playing MineCraft.
I haven't been able to get any log information because the entire system freezes, so there's no opportunity for the system to log anything. I've tried running System Monitor and a command-line window while I was playing: Memory is not even at half capacity and no core seems to be overtaxed. No error messages come up on the command-line. Prior to crashing the only thing that happens in the debug window you can launch for MineCraft is that I get quite a few "Is the server lagging? I'm behind by 50 ticks." (the number varies between 40 and 100) messages.
I'd suspect hardware except no other software has this problem. I'm unsure how to test the (onboard) sound card. Is there a way to test Video RAM?
I appreciate any suggestions, insights or clarifying questions. Thanks in advance.
