i would normally ask for a dxdiag log, but i see your computer is a vista machine, which would say that computer should be in a museum and not for playing games, new computer time
I read on other forums that it was possible to play on Vista, so I tried my luck since my main computer just died yesterday, and the Vista one was the only one i had on my hands atm.
Say something silly, Laugh 'til it hurts, Take a risk, Sing out loud, Rock the boat, Shake things up, Flirt with disaster, Buy something frivolous, Color outside the lines, Cause a scene, Order dessert, Make waves, Get carried away, Have a great day!
And it's 32-bit, ok his computer is really from medieval ages and really doesn't meet Minecraft's system requirements!

You could try installing linux 32 bit on the machine and i am sure that if you start with minecraft 1.7.10 and work your way up to find out what versions work with that laptop . start off with a live USB version of Linux Mint 32 bit to test the machine with the OS. Google Linux Mint Live USB to get instructions . Also read up on what version is best for older hardware , it will give the machine new useful life
But even running Linux the computer is below the requirements for Minecraft so may not run or will run badly.

Thanks i'll try that. Also, completely unrelated to topic but can you use this linux boot to access a computer that has his main hard drive failing? (actually it's only the boot files that are somehow corrupted)

Could someone enlighten me on the cause please

Is there really no way to play on Vista?
Post your DxDiag log here. http://hopper.minecraft.net/help/pixel-format-not-accelerated/support/
