Got a new laptop earlier this year, Acer Nitro 5 - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx, 8 GB of RAM. I know it's not that great, but it works fairly well with most games. I assumed Minecraft wouldn't be a problem because there's many other, seemingly more complex games that this can run. Boy was I wrong. It can run smoothly, 50-60+ FPS, never really cared about super high framerates so this is fine for me.
Except for one little thing.
Random, seemingly unprompted lag spikes. Not even sure if I can call this "lag." It makes the game literally unplayable. It ranges from happening every 10 minutes to every 5 seconds. It even happened multiple times while I was paused, in the settings trying to fix it. Happens in 1.14.3, all the way back to 1.12.1. I'm not willing to use older versions of that so I haven't tested them. The frames usually drop to about 5, sometimes lower, and occasionally, one or zero.
Some context for the screenshot. Minecraft version 1.14.3. I was attempting to fill out and label a medium sized map of the world. I was stood completely still in the air, not interacting with the game at all, and waiting for the chunks to load. The FPS dropped to a literal zero for a few seconds, and this has happened before. I'm using the Optifine mod, which didn't make it worse, but it didn't help.
All the vanilla Minecraft settings and the Optifine settings are at their most efficient, except for a render distance of 8 and fast clouds because I dislike the empty sky. The fact that it runs so smoothly in between these spikes makes me think it's some kind of weird incompatibility with the game rather than poorness of quality. The cheap 5 year old laptop that I got rid of could play Minecraft better. Anyone know what I can do to fix this? If I can just get it to stay at 50-60 I'll be happy. Obviously by my laptop choice, money isn't great so.. I'm hoping there's any options other than to buy a better card/laptop.
