I have a friend in Malaysia who doesn't have money for this game. I haven't been able to figure out a reliable way to purchase it for him. I live in Canada.
Am I able to make a Canadian account, purchase the game in a way that obviously won't provide him access to my private information, then give him the information for the account so he can download it where he lives?
Can anyone help? Official support for this is abysmal and information incredibly scarce for what I would think would be a pretty common situation.
There's no way to check which countries can redeem the code. I'm almost positive it won't work for Malaysia. Is there someway to check? I've been struggling with this and different support staff who are all giving me different answers and cutting off communication completely unsure and telling me I should find out more for like 5 days now.
I'd love to see a list of countries the redeemable gift codes are available to if purchased in another region because all I want to do is buy my friend the game.
I happen to know for a fact that at the very least, if purchased on a Microsoft account it won't be available to him. I purchased the wrong version of windows10 by accident for him originally and it wasn't possible for him to do anything with the code on his end. It refused him entirely.
The message he gets is:
"Contact your seller to get a code that works in your region. The code was purchased in a different region and cannot be redeemed."
The whole premise of the idea of making a new account is that if I were to move to Malaysia, I don't think Mojang would drop my access to the game for simply being in another region. So he should be able to use the new account at his own discretion.
Webrosc's advice is the only one we can give, as we are not Mojang and have no access to any account information and their rules about redeeming codes in other countries.
So basically risk it against the evidence supporting it won't work or wait for Mojang's unprecedentedly poor customer service for 2 months because they're still dealing with tickets from mid Feb.

i think you should risk sharing an account, have gotten away with it. just make sure they don't hack online. i would suggest also sending them money through your bank or visit them, where you can play minecraft together
I'll probably just risk paying for it. It's not terribly expensive. I just wish the Mojang did a better job of making information available to potential customers. I've gotten no traction on this whatsoever and all I want to do is give them money for their product as long as I know the person who will be recieving it can actually use it. I've never seen support for an online service be so incredibly evasive/inadequate. They almost literally might as well not have customer support if it takes them 2 months to get back to you.
I've never seen a company disregard prioritizing customer support so blatantly.

You could try using a VPN to buy it in his region.
Minecraft blocks most VPNs so that wouldn't be advised. Plus it could cause complications later on if he needs to prove where he bought the account from
I'm going to see if he can use my Canadian account to download and play the game. If that works then I can make him his own and everything is good. I'll post an update later on. Thanks for the replies fellas.
Are you sure? That's the only thing I needed to know. It's not stated anywhere else easily found online and that's not the case with Microsoft accounts selling the other versions.
Alright so my friend now owns the game. I used an account he had made locally in Malaysia. He gave me his info, I logged in, I selected Malaysia as the region and paid with my credit card, then logged out and he logged in where he lives in Malaysia and downloaded it.
This method worked for me. I took a risk doing this however, not knowing if he would be able to even use it as the billing address was Canadian one. So thanks for that Mojang, you cucks.
Hope this helps someone in the future who needs information on how to provide a friend across the globe with Minecraft seeing as Mojang literally can't be assed to help it's customers whatsoever.
