Hey, so i've been playing multiplayer servers for the last 3 days but before then I hadn't played MC for about half a year. Anyways, I wanted to try out a custom map and decided on herobrines mansion. I downloaded it added it to my saves, and it appeared in my worlds. Herobrines mansion was made for 1.7.2 so I launched it in 1.7.2, went to singleplayer, clicked play on herobrines mansion, and it crashes. No error message or nothing. Any help? (It does appear to be working on later versions but you need to do 1.7.2 for HM)
There should be a crash report or at least some error, in %appdata%\.minecraft\crash-reports (on Windows), or in the game output/launcher log; otherwise, I can't say what could be wrong but the first thing that comes to mind is that you tried running it in the same directory as a newer version - you should always run separate versions in separate directories to avoid issues like this (in particular, 1.7.x will crash if the render distance was set above 16 in a newer version):

This is the same error I mentioned before, caused by a render distance set too high in a newer version; you should make a new profile with its own game directory (you could also edit or delete options.txt but that leaves the risk of it happening again or opening a world in the wrong version, and there may be other settings that conflict, and you'd have to do this every time or remember to lower the render distance before exiting 1.8+).
To change your game to a different version, start the launcher. Select Launch options -> Add New. In the "Version" dropdown menu, select the game version you want, and click Save. Finally, in the News tab, select the profile you just created using the arrow next to the Play button, then click Play.[/p]
You can turn "Advanced Settings" on to show more profile options.
If you want to change the .minecraft file path, turn the on the "Game directory" option. Now, navigate to the folder where you wish to relocate the .minecraft folder. You can also open the Minecraft profile by clicking the green arrow-shaped "Go to folder" button.
You can also just add something to the end of the default path; e.g. I have several custom directories like .minecraft\TMCWv4 and .minecraft\Testing; the folders will automatically be created the first time you run the game, then you can put your custom map in the saves folder inside it (the game does not need to be relaunched, it will read the saves folder when you click on singleplayer).

How do I create a new profile on the new launcher?

The link in my first post shows how to make a new profile, and more importantly (many people omit this) to set a new game directory:
