I have seen a few results in Google pertaining to this but none of the workarounds are working for me.
These included reloading the resource packs in game (F3+T. F3+S doesn't do anything). Changing mipmap slider. Reinstalling Minecraft.
When I launch the game, there is no sound output to Windows. It doesn't show up in the Windows volume mixer.
I checked the log and it says that it's launching in "silent mode", which is confirmation that the game itself isn't launching properly and isn't outputting any audio to Windows.
I have a professional external sound card (Focusrite Scarlett) with it's own driver (Scarlett MixControl).
This soundcard is set as the default output device in Windows. All other outputs are disabled. I have no issue with sound in any other program.
I just wiped and reformatted my system drive, with a fresh install of the latest Windows 10. No way there is an issue with the OS.
I have the Windows 10 edition installed and the sound works. I would just switch to that program but already started a realm with someone in the java edition. I looked into maybe transferring the world to Windows 10 edition but it seems a bit unclear or difficult to do.

Guess what? I searched for "ALCmmdevPlayback_resetProxy: Failed to initialize audio client: 0x80070057" and found one result on Google.
Page didn't exist anymore.
Loaded cached version of page.
Person with the same issue just tried switching to different sample rate/bit depth settings in the advanced properties of the output in Windows.
In my case I switched to 2 channel/16bit/44.1khz and it's fixed!
Looks like Minecraft doesn't like any advanced >2 multichannel or sample/bit rates, even if it works in Windows.
Please leave this thread up for other people with professional audio interfaces. It took me a long time to find the solution.
