Recently my Minecraft .skins folder got deleted and information about this on other forums didn’t exist other than having a flash drive for, a different computer and stuff. One of the methods I tried, uninstalling and reinstalling didn’t work, along with deleting everything off of the Minecraft folder. I need some help to get some light on this problem and how other people are having this problem too and not replying after if the solution was solved or not. If I delete the assets folder, will my client break? Or will more problems unfold? The questions I have on this really seems to be common so I expect people to reply to this
What exactly is the issue? The folder you mention is only used to temporarily cache player skins that the game downloads, which should be redownloaded if they do not exist (in singleplayer you'll only see one skin, your own, which is stored in a file with an encoded name; for example). I don't know if the game deletes old files but in my case it hasn't (though I play in 1.6.4, which does not download a skin or use anything that exists here; it is from when I played 1.13 6 months ago).
If you are playing in a version older than 1.7.10 and do not see a custom skin that is because the skin server that they used was taken down; you'll have to make a resource pack if you want a custom skin (which also must use the 64x32 format. You can find an example in this download for one of my mods, as the CustomSkin folder (which can be directly copied to the resourcepacks folder; the game can read either a zip file or a normal folder). For 1.5.2 and older versions you'll need to make a texture pack, which is pretty similar.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
