OK, got an xbox one controller, it powers up, the Alienware laptop sees it. Now what? How do I get it to interact with Minecraft PC? Someone mentioned steam, and since I was a Boiler Tech in the Navy years ago I feel funny asking this, but what is steam and how do I get it?

This ain't no party, this ain't no disco, this ain't no foolin' around...
Hi! I commented on your original thread. Steam isn't in any way associated with Minecraft, but now that you mention it I did see a video once that demonstrated using Steam to play Minecraft.
Steam is essentially a digital video game marketplace, in fact the largest and has been for quiet some time. It also contains a library of all the games you purchase on it, which makes finding and launching them easy.
According to the video I saw, if you download the Steam desktop app, make an account, click the library tab at the top, you should then see a button on the bottom left that says "add a game". Click it, and then you have to browse your files to locate the .exe application that is Minecraft (literally says Minecraft.exe). If you need help finding it, right click the Minecraft shortcut on your desktop and click "open file location".
After adding Minecraft as a game to Steam, you need to open Steam in "big picture mode" which you can do in the top right. Then, plug in your controller and Steam should automatically detect it. The only problem from here is that since PC Minecraft wasn't meant to be played with a controller, you have to go into the settings and map each action to the button on the controller yourself. I'm not sure I can easily guide you with that so you'll have to find it on your own.
Again, I don't know if this method even works and since you're not even familiar with Steam, you're much better off just getting used to playing with a mouse and keyboard. It's not that difficult, just keep your left hand on WASD to move and your right on the mouse. Left click mines and right click places.
I hope if you can't get the controller to work properly it won't dissuade you from playing the PC version (which is superior by all accounts). Good luck! And thank you for your service in the Navy.
I am SO close. Got minecraft in steam as non-steam game, controller works in steam. When steam launches minecraft (in Big Picture), that's the end of controller. It is just back to mouse then, controller does nothing.
Any ideas?

This ain't no party, this ain't no disco, this ain't no foolin' around...
first, you need to enable Xbox configuration support in steam (settings -> controller settings).
then, you need to configure the controller (go to the game (but don't launch it) -> controller configuration)
lastly, the configuration probably won't take effect until you launch Minecraft, so you'll need to manually start up the game from the launcher.
BTW, if you just want the vanilla Minecraft experience on a controller, and you're running windows 10, it's actually better to use Minecraft: Windows 10 edition, which is running under the bedrock engine, with higher performance and native xbox controller support (no steam required).
I'm getting really frustrated, tech has passed me by (I'm old) and damit, I just want to plug something in and have it work. I know I'm wrong about this, but steam and a little thing I just tried (JoyToStick) just seem terribly ponderous to me. You younger folks who grew up gaming have such an advantage....
Gonna reload steam and see if I'm capable of following your directions...

you could also search for a program called controller companion. it is available on steam or for regular download. it id not free however i think it may be via steam. not sure. anyway, controller companion lets you set up profiles for games. in doing such, you can manually tell the program what controller button corresponds to a keyboard key. Here is what i have set up. the . is what i use for dropping items, since i accidentally press q often.
OK, let me explain what I am trying to accomplish.
I play console, PS3 and PS4. I know those controls. I want to play Java on my Alienware laptop with the xbox one controller i just bought. I want the controller configured just like the PS controllers.
So, does your recommendation still apply? I just can't believe this is so frikin' complicated...

Yes it should still apply. I only play on a laptop with an xbox 360 controller and the controller companion program. I am slower then just using a keyboard, but yes it still works fine. the website i linked in my previous replay shows a video of it.

So, what you have to do. Either pay $3 for Controller Companion, or set up Steam to use it
Getting Controller Companion:
Buy it from Steam. go to Store -> Search -> Type in Controller Companion -> Put in cart -> then follow Steam's instructions for setting up a payment method and buying it.
Set up Steam to use remotes:
Click on Steam in the Steam Application, click on Settings, click on Controller, General Controller Settings, Xbox Configuration Settings, and follow what Steam tells you to do.
Then right click on Minecraft in library, Controller Configuration, then set it up from there.
Setting it up with Steam is hard and your gonna have to Google/figure it out yourself because I don't have a controller I can try to set up myself.

Why would anyone want Windows 10 edition if they have a paid version on Minecraft Java? It's a bit faster but no mods, paying for skins, texture packs, maps, etc...
you could try using joy2key, its emulates keypresses on the controller https://joytokey.net/en/ (its free to try) or xpadder, which does the same and is more refined but not free https://www.xpadder.com/ , there is more than likely many others out there, those are just 2 i know of, i have used xpadder in the past
there's always controller support mods if you don't mind using a modded environment with Forge. if you go that route you might also want to try out optifine for better performance and visuals, and maybe later start looking at other mods - although some mods have their own keybinds so you won't be able to use just a controller anymore.

because, at least when I got it, Windows 10 edition was free for Java Edition owners. And you do *not* have to pay for custom skins, texture maps, maps, ect… - you might want to actually know what you're talking about before you say such things. And I say this as someone who almost never uses Windows 10 edition over Java Edition.

Yes you do, they added it in.
There are no mods, it's a huge tradeoff for better FPS. It's like playing the Dark Souls Remastered Demo vs Dark Souls Remastered.
This thread is about putting minecraft on steam and using a controller, NOT which version the OP should buy instead, if you wish to discuss that with each other please do it elsewhere
Most games these days have controller support but Java Minecraft is fairly old in the grand scheme of things and I suppose they never felt it was necessary to do the work to add it.
The only thing I can do now to help is try to guide you from where you are. It's great that you added the game to Steam and launched Steam in big picture mode. I looked into it some more and found where the settings you need to change are.
Once in big picture mode, click the cog in the upper right and then click on "controller settings" and then enable the checkbox that says "xbox configuration support" (or ps4 if you prefer). Next, while still in big picture mode, go to your game library and click on Minecraft. Then, on the left panel, there should be another cog that says "manage game". Once you click it, then click "controller configuration". From here, you need to map the actions to specific buttons. For instance, map what would normally be left click on a mouse to be the right trigger on the controller. You can also map WASD to each of the directional inputs on the control stick.
I hope you eventually get it to work. It is a pain because there's no native controller support but most games have it so it's not usually this big of a problem.

Created steam acct
logged in to steam
I see no 'library' tab anywhere
I see no 'add game' anywhere.
