I wanted to get back into modded minecraft and successfully got Optifine working. I then tried installing two different mini-map mods and neither worked. Forge still confuses me, so I'm sure I am doing something wrong. I dropped the mini-map mod into the mod folder and started Minecraft using the Optifine/Forge profile. How do I add a profile for Forge, Optifine AND my mini-map?

You'll want to download and run the Forge installer for the version you're attempting to play. Then you'll want to download the version of Optifine for the version you're playing and the mini-map mod.
Set up a new profile in the launcher (preferably using a separate directory) and tell it to use the Forge version you installed. Let the game run until the title screen, then close it.
Finally, add Optifine and the mini-map mod to the mods folder in your directory for the new profile. Next time you use that profile, it should have the two mods installed.
