So I haven't tried to use a mod for Minecraft since way back in beta.
When I launch my game, the bottom corner says v.1.6.1
When I went to get Forge for the first time I thought I just needed the newest version so I ended up with 1.12 something, but then I read it has to be the same as the MC version, so I got 1.6.1.
The first one I got might have installed, but the 1.6.1 is giving me an error saying I need to launch the game at least once before it can install. That would be a quick fix if I hadn't already done that. But I have, I have 4 worlds in my game that I've played a lot recently.
I noticed something suspicious though... there are no files in my "saves" folder under the appdata/roaming/.minecraft path...
So where is my actual game?
I have Win10 and the screenshots I keep seeing of the title page look like classic Minecraft, but mine looks a lot different. I believe I've been launching it through some kind of "app" because Win10 is all about its apps. So... do I have to download the classic launcher before I can use Forge? Is the 1.12 install interfering with the 1.6? And if so, how do I uninstall it? (It doesn't show up in Control Panel as an installed program, and from experience, just deleting folders isn't a good idea.)
Asking before I go downloading a bunch of crap and having it not actually work.
You need to download the Java edition of the game; 1.6.1 is the current version for the Windows 10 / "Bedrock" edition, which is more or less a separate game (based on the original "Pocket Edition"):
If you've played (bought) the Java edition before you should be able to just download it from here; you may have to migrate your account to a Mojang account if you have not played for a long time:
Note also that the current version for Java is 1.13.1; you'll need to downgrade to the correct version to use mods but that is very easy to do on Java:
Note: it is very highly recommended to create a separate profile with its own game directory (see link above) to avoid opening modded/vanilla worlds in the wrong version, which will corrupt them. In any case, you cannot open Bedrock edition worlds in Java and vice-versa.

Got it, thanks!
(I didn't have to downgrade. It works fine!)
This whole time I thought I was playing the real version?! That's so weird. When I first started playing again I had to go to hell and back just to get into my account. When I did my custom skin was still in there and everything! I don't know how I ended up with a different version...
There's no way to back up/migrate my world?
This was a lot of work just to cut trees...

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Got it, thanks!
