I have a pretty good computer. My specs:
i7 8700
GTX 1080
16GB DDR4
And an SSD
However, I get unbearable lag when using Extreme (32 chunk) render distance. Is this normal for a machine that can run Fortnite at max graphics 180FPS?
Fortnite is well optimized. Minecraft is not.
I can play on the bedrock edition at 64 chunk distance without any lag, but on the java edition I'm lucky to get 20 chunks running at 60fps.
It's just due to the sloppy way they created Minecraft Java, and there isn't a whole lot you can do about it unfortunately.
I'd drop to 20 chunks. Most servers have their draw distance set to 10 chunks so having it further doesn't help a whole lot.

Ok thanks! I was using 20 chunks. I'm going to give bedrock a shot too.
