I would really like to replay the Deep Space Turtle Chase map but it requires Beta 1.8.1. Does anybody know of a way to get the original 1.8.1 files?[/p]

Thanks in advance.[/p]
The problem with that is that it requires the old file system but downloading the old version through the launcher just gives you the game version and not the file system.
Deep Space Turtle Chase was created using the 1.8.1 Beta, it uses an installer and not a folder. It has custom sounds and resource packs, ETC. To install it you need the old file system which the launcher does not give you so i need the original files somehow.
As far as I can tell (based on this forum thread for a version for release 1.1) this is not just a map but a mod, and I know that many older mods will not work if you just install them into a current .minecraft folder (including after you get through the hassle of manual installation by editing files so the launcher doesn't reset the jar*), with the game crashing with a "URI is not hierarchical" error, since old versions of Modloader were designed for the original file system (the only solution that I know of is to use a 3rd party launcher that can replicate the original structure or try the mod given here*).
*Note that the installation instructions for older mods have not been updated to reflect changes since 1.6; namely, you have to make a copy of the folder for the version that you want to modify, then rename it and the jar and json files inside to the same names, then open the json and search for "id": "version", where "version" is the name of the version and change that to the name you gave to the files. Then, search for "client.jar", which will be in a section beginning with "downloads" and delete the entire section (which from what I've seen is right before the aforementioned "id" line). Here is an example (for 1.12.2); the highlighted part must be deleted while the "id" line is right below it (note - Notepad does not know how to format the line breaks, but you can simply copy and paste it into the box at http://redditpreview.com/ then copy it back and it will be properly formatted).
The only way to get sounds in old versions is to get a copy of the assets from another computer since the server they downloaded sounds from no longer works:
[Mojang] Petr Mrázek added a comment - 25/Jun/18 6:10 PM - edited We will need the old sound data uploaded to the current assets storage, we will need new metadata (assets indexes) made for the old releases AND we will need launcher changes to fix this properly.
You may have heard that you can use an older version of the launcher to properly download sounds but that only works for 1.6 as the issue here is that the launcher doesn't place the files in the right folders, not that they don't exist at all (for much the same reason the only way to get a custom skin in versions prior to 1.7.9 is to use a resource/texture pack, and custom heads/player-like NPCs will not work properly unless a mod modified them to use custom texture files).
The URL you give (http://ha3extra.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/matmos/online_database.xml) gives me a "404 not found" error; I presume that this was used for custom sound files (as opposed to the vanilla sounds, which are another issue). The option "use_online_database::false" also seems to say that the game will not use the provided URL unless it is edited to true (which as mentioned doesn't seem to work. That said, I found what appears to be the current site, https://minecraft.ha3.eu/matmos, but as mentioned before vanilla sounds will not work).
Unlock Beta versions in the launcher. It may be incomplete (many specific versions are missing), but it's worth the try.

What do you need that for? I thought you could just launch it? Or am i missing something here?

Hmmm... Isn't running the game setup the savedata and stuff? Might recommend changing your game folder as it'll interfere with your data.

TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
i deleted everything and i've done this before
here is a video on how to get everything but the sound working
i was hoping someone would know how to fix it

i believe it uses Matmos combined with it's custom sounds wich were probably taken down since it is 7 years old now
