Something really weird happened on my Minecraft realms server yesterday. One of the players went through his nether portal from the nether to the underworld, and his base was just.. gone. Looks like all the chunks in a small area around the portal had reset - even the loot was back in the underwater treasure chests. The game created a new portal in the overworld on top of where his base should have been, since the original one was gone too.
How does something like this happen? I tried restoring a backup version of the world, but kept getting timeout errors from Mojang. At this point we've kind of accepted the change, but we're all pretty terrified that this will happen again. Can we prevent this from happening in the future somehow?
I've contacted Mojang support as well but in the past they've been pretty unhelpful. Thanks!
I just want to know how this kind of thing happens and whether it is likely to happen again. Some of the people on our realm are refusing to go to the nether now for fear it'll glitch out their bases. I have no clue if that's reasonable or not.
Is this a known bug? Did the nether portal cause it, or was that just a fluke? I was hoping for answers like that.

That's what backups are for, but as you couldn't use them and only mojang can tell why there is little we can do here.

No idea. Has never happened on our realm. And we have had a few maps.
