I've been playing on a friend's family server for nearly a month now, and it's been a lot of fun. However, I'm having problems even getting it to "ping", let alone load and even give me an error that I can look up and solve intuitively. I've tried restarting the game, restarting the computer, and even tried changing versions to 1.7.10 in order to try major servers and find out if its just the server I'm playing or the 1.13 bugs causing issues for me. Alas, none of these things have worked. Since I'm an amateur at this stuff; I recently learned how to move modded folders around so that I could play mods that aren't on the Curse launcher and expand my knowledge of Minecraft mods, and I'm always learning more about computers every day, I was hoping someone with more experience could give me advice. Thanks for all the feedback, and I'll let you guys know when I have found the best solution!
There is one thing worrying me, and that is MacAfee. While on the forums, my computer would instantly create another tab for a MacAfee ad. That could have something to do with it, but I really hope this isn't the case.
I tried again before you responded and it did ping, but it said it couldn’t connect to the server. I was happy to at least see progress. But when I tried loading the server, the error said, “io.netty.channel.AbstractChannel$AnnotatedConnectException: Connection refused: no further information:
I looked that up and I found a few post saying that no matter what they tried they couldn’t fix it. Someone said something about checking a firewall in one, and the problem somehow fixed itself on another. I updated Java like the FAQ asked anyway, but it didn’t work. I’m thinking I have to check my firewall, but I wanted to ask if there were other ways of fixing the problem. Thanks for the feedback!

Remove incompatible programs like the FAQ tells you to do.
