I recently switched to Linux because of some windows issues with my workflow. In attempt to play minecraft, I seem to be unable to connect to the authentication servers. I know this isn't an issue with the authentication servers because others are able to connect just fine. Not to mention it's been "down" for the past couple days.
I wasn't able to find anything to fix this issue for linux clients since this is a common problem for linux servers.
After you've installed Lutris, go to https://lutris.net/games/minecraft/. Scroll down and click the Install button next to the LINUX New launcher version.
Then just go through the setup process.
After that you should be able to find the game on your desktop/application menu. Open Minecraft and login.
When you start the game, you should be able to go online.
Hope this helps

Any and all ideas are welcome.
I also have this problem. I still don't know why this is happening, because my grandparents also have linux, and it works fine on there.
I tried downgrading from Java 11 to 8, but it still didn't work.
Still searching for a solution, but if I find one, I will post it here.
I just found a solution for this problem:
First you have to install Lutris. You can find the instructions on https://lutris.net/downloads/.
After you've installed Lutris, go to https://lutris.net/games/minecraft/. Scroll down and click the Install button next to the LINUX New launcher version.
Then just go through the setup process.
