I want to retain my 1.12.2. I also saw info on creating a profile to retain 1.12.2, but I will delay that, and 1.13 until later, because I already see numerous problems have arisen. The creators of 1.13 were likely too excited about their creation to be able to see pitfalls that should have been fixed prior to release!
Hopefully, if I open Minecraft Java, as it is now on my computer, with 1.12.2 and Forge as the default profile, I will be able to delay the weeks and months of frustration that will come with 1.13
What, exactly, does Cross-platform mean above??? Better-Together (Bedrock) was marketed as cross-platform. But what does cross-platform mean for Minecraft Java???? This is another example where insider, long-term Minecrafters and programmers are confusing with words. Minecraft lingo has too many words that mean very different things. There have been too many official postings, such as Better Together as thewords for what appears as Bedrock in some places, Windows 10 (at the but site), etc... The marketed and words used in FAQs are notconsistent with drop down options at the bug site. Is Minecraft Java now going to be cross-platform across computers, iphones, ipads, and console devices???? OR, is the should the wording related to 1.13 be multiplay, and not cross-platform???
So, if 1.13 is truly cross-platform, will any given game on a purchased Realm, work for persons with different devices (platforms), if they have Minecraft Java and 1.13 properly installed???
My understanding of cross-platform means across DEVICES, based on official statements, official FAQs, and my experience with Better-Together (Bedrock, WIndows 10 PE). So, please clarify:
What can be done with Minecraft Java 1.13, individually and multiplay, across what devices???
So 12.2.2 will still be there??? I just do not trust it. And what does Cross-platform, server.jar mean??? That is in the instructions, with NO explanation as to what it does. But thanks for you helpful reply! I do appreciate it. Hopefully, the official sources, posts, and documents will become more clear. However, based on past experience, I have seen minimal revision and editing for clarity. Particularly for words used in different ways and different meanings, in Better Together (aka Bedrock, Windows 10 PE) and Minecraft Java.
Thanks. The official sources need to make that clear in the wording, and to disginguish it (operating systems) from cross platform in Better Together (Multiple devices, not just PCs)!

Instructions for 1.13 need clarification! From Ostergard's article, I see
To install the release, open up the Minecraft Launcher and click play!
Cross-platform server jar: Minecraft server jar
I'm assuming that you've already bought Minecraft. After downloading Minecraft, you should get a window that looks similar to this.
Click the button with the arrow right next to the button that says play.
A menu should pop up, like the image above. Click "Latest Release 1.13" and then click play. Hopefully, that works for you.
Cheers
