The Green locator is still present, but the white locator disappeared. Before recent glitches due to Better Together updates, in that version, the locators pointed in the direction one was moving, and moved with the player. In Java, I have two locator maps for a new, small world. I did rename the maps, so that when I scroll over the map on a map wall, the map name appears. I have done renamed maps in Better Together, and the white locator still did work. I am not readily finding information on the white locator disappearing in Java locator maps. Update: I went back and created new maps, and did not rename them. I put them in frames on a map wall, and the moving, pointer white locator is gone. There is a white square that is stuck in the border. It also looks like there is no updating of maps, after posted on a map wall. I removed the newer maps from a map wall. The white, pointer, moving locator returned.
Is there a setting that I missed? This is not enjoyable, at all.
I know they are different. I am trying to understand what is different about the locator maps in Java. Oh, I think I see what you mean. There is only one type of map, not two options, in inventory, in Java. But the maps in Java do have white locators with pointers! So Java has maps with locators, but they are not Locator Maps???
If you are trying to see the differences i suggest you have a good read of the wiki instead of making a thread for everything you don't understand the differences between

ModeratorMinecraft java does not have locator maps, they are a bedrock version item
https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Map#Player_marker_and_pointer
And you keep going on about recent glitches in the bedrock edition, those DO NOT effect the java version as they are 2 different games
