Due to time necessary to deal with issues caused by Better Together and hacking at Microsoft, I have been away from Minecraft Java about 10 months. Version 1.12.2. I had a carefully crafted World, with Java, Forge, and other delightful add ons. I had the Java and add on verions compatible with 1.12.2, at the time. When I went back to Minecraft Java today, I do not see any of the add ons, and do not see my world. I can find program folders and files at *%appdata%\.minecraft\* . Due to the hacking, and confusing issues related to have multiple accounts to allow for individual plan for multiple children on multiple devices, simultaneously, I spend a lot of time reloading Windows 10, and that version of Minecraft. I don't remember reloading Minecraft Java (two accounts). I eventually realized Minecraft Java was too complicated for the children. Minecraft Java is superior to Better Together for creativity and options. Thus, I am returning to it. Is it possible that my carefully created World is still somewhere on file? If so, where should I look? At the time, I don't think I had the know-how to export or download the world to a location where it would be safe from automatic erasure by Mojang and/or Windows. What is the file extension for a Minecraft Java world? Perhaps I did back it up, and can search for it.
Minecraft java and windows 10 edition are 2 different games, and addon you got for the windows 10 edition are not going to show on the java version as they are not for that version
I know that. That is not my question. I mention Windows 10 because that is what sidetracked me from Java. I am back to Java now. I want to know where to search for my Minecraft Java world! I need to know where to look for it, and what the file extension is, in case I did back it up somewhere. I also do not see Forge, nor the other add ons, when I open Minecraft Java.
So, if I copy all the files in the saves folder to another directory, will that save them a backup? I don't see an option to backup or export the game I created.
I figured it out. I can copy the game folder in toto, from saves. My eyes started to adjust to the different look. I found the copy link, which is an alternative.
After encountering dangerous pop ups at curse and forge, I remembered that Minecraft Java is not only complicated for young children, but that no one, especially a child, is safe at these sites! There are relentless, intrusive, bullying, lying pop up ads that indicate download is required in order to install the actual intended add-on! I thought I had safely bypassed those traps, but in seconds after getting Minecraft Java and add-ons restored, my computer became locked in a screen that looked like official Windows security, with an official-looking Edge pop up. The pop up message said I had 5 minutes to send my Microsoft email log in and password to avoid blockage of my computer. I used task-manager to get out of that screen and pop up, and ran virus and malware protection immediately. Are there any reports for incidence of hacking and infections, related to Minecraft Java and add-on sites? I'll try to google that. That will also be on my list of topics to discuss with the US Congressional candidate who is a software engineer, cyber security expert, and game developer! I was away from Minecraft Java, due to issues related to Better Together, and being hacked by someone @mail.ru (Russia) and someone @123.com (Asia). At that time I had been in Minecraft Java about 2 weeks, in addition to Minecraft Windows 10. The automated, artificial intelligence process for account recovery did not restore my Minecraft content and purchases, nor the 4 years of work-related content on onedrive! Microsoft did refund several fraudulent Minecraft purchases by the hackers, as did amazon.com! The only financial attempts were for Minecraft products. At the time, and still now, I think that episode, and it's aftermath, were due to a breach in Microsoft security related to multiple accounts, and not due to Minecraft Java. However, it is dreadful that the Minecraft Java add-on sites are so dangerous!

Moderatoryour java world will be in the saves folder in the .minecraft folder, where it has always been, it isn't a single file but a folder of files
So, if I copy all the files in the saves folder to another directory, will that save them a backup? I don't see an option to backup or export the game I created.

Moderatoryes, a backup is done by copying the folders to a safe place
