I really want to go back to an older version of Minecraft for the nostalgia, but I can't figure out how to install any of the old mods. I would really love to be able to install Too Many Items specifically, if anybody could help me out with that. Thanks!
You have to first make a copy of the version that you want to mod (in .minecraft\versions\1.0.0, where you want to copy the 1.0.0 folder), then rename the folder and the files inside of it, e.g. 1.0.0-modded, then open the json file and search for "id": "1.0.0" and change "1.0.0" to the name you used for the files. Next, search for "client.jar", which will be part of a URL, and delete the entire "downloads" section enclosing it (everything from "downloads" to a closing brace and comma at the end. Make sure you do not delete anything else, as there are downloads for other files; it is very easy to make a mistake which will cause the version to not show up in the launcher). This will prevent the launcher from detecting that the jar has been modified and redownloading it and you can then install the mod as usual (open the jar with a zip utility and add the mod files, remembering to delete META-INF. Note - do not open and extract the jar with Windows' built-in zip utility, as various versions have class files with invalid filenames, which will break if you extract it).

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Thank you so so much! Appreciate it a lot. Have a good day.
