I'm trying to add more ram to my game and I have 16GB ram on my computer. I tried just changing the JVM thing to 4G but it said it wouldn't work so I looked it up. When I did it said to go to the advanced settings and set up a -JAVA_OPTIONS thing. I did but whenever I put the value over 512 my Minecraft just won't open. I tried to click it and open it with right click and with administrator but nothing worked. Whenever I changed the value back to 512 though it would start. Please help.
I understand your struggle. I think you just may be doing this wrong. Besides, 4GB of ram is way enough for vanilla minecraft, I would stick with 2GB right now as it is not necessary.
I will help you step by step to allocate more ram to minecraft.
1. Open your minecraft launcher
2. Go to 'Launcher options' tab
3. Select the version of minecraft you wish to use at the moment

1. Open your minecraft launcher

3. Select the version of minecraft you wish to use at the moment
4. Switch the 'JVM arguments' selection on
5. You will see:
-Xmx1G -XX:+UnlockExperimentalVMOptions -XX:+UseG1GC -XX:G1NewSizePercent=20 -XX:G1ReservePercent=20 -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=50 -XX:G1HeapRegionSize=16M
Change the '-Xmx1G' to '-Xmx2G' (First characters)
6. Click save
7. Launch
Remove Java options entirely. RAM allocation is done through the launcher.
